I know there's a lot of you out there who listen to this so help me out. I've heard some stuff and like it but have no idea what I'm listening to/what it's called etc. So what's the deal? What's the different types and the difference between them? What's fresh and new? What about DJ remixes etc.?

Thanks :)

Desi music is all Indian music in general. Bhangra is Punjabi music, a song like that remix with Jay-Z (Punjabi MC - Beware of the Boys). Chutney is west indian music.

Just remember that when you're dancing to bhangra, don't PUSH UP with your hands going up and down in the air. PULL IN on the beats, PULL IN!!! Otherwise you look like some cracka/{insert applicable non-desi racial slur} fool.

here are some links:

Bhangra
(In addition to Jay-z, Punjabi MC ;Harbhajan Mann, Bally Sagoo, Jasbir Jassi are some of the current, more popular artists.)

You can download some torrents here

Chutney Music, as someone already mentioned, is music from the West Indies (or the Carribean). AFAIK, it is mostly composed by people of (North) Indian origin. Chutney = food item, often goes with curry.

Desi music is the superset which stands for all music from India. (or the Indian Subcontinent) It includes classical, film music, folk music, etc.)

Obligatory dictinary dot com links:
Bhangra
Chutney

Re: Bhangra vs Raas vs Garba:
I have lived in Delhi (as close as it gets to Punjab for me!) and Gujrat (Ahmedabad); so I dont want to play favorites ;)

Get some songs by Sukhbir, mainly one called Ishq.

It's a really nice song and it has a nice video for it too...good dancing.

I'm not a fan of a lot of the UK bhangra stuff, it's too techno for me...but Sukhbir has some good songs.

Rishi Rich is pretty awesome too - I like 'tere chehre'.
Sukhbir just has one song that is good - Ishq - sort of like a one hit wonder - i havent heard even one other song from him that is any good.

BTW - WTF is chutney - i'm desi and i've never heard of 'chutney' as a desi genre?

Yeah, Chutney doesn't typically get grouped with desi music, although it is music derived from people of Indian descent living in Carribean (mainly Guyana and Trinidad).

Chutney is usually grouped with Soca (songs like Kevin Lyttle's Turn Me On) and Calypso.

Chutney music is either sung in English or Hindi, or a mix of both and is pretty lighthearted, bordlerline stupid lyrics, but still fun to dance to.

Example of some lyrics from one of the popular songs right now:

"Rum til I die, it's rum til I die, she tells me she don't love me, and that's the reason why..."
