She's 19, and has smoked for a year. Usually only 1/2-1 cigarette a day, maybe 2 if she gets stressed.

She is addicted I believe, and she gets very upset if she can't smoke or I complain to her about it and ask her not to smoke.

What's a good method for her to quit?

[*]Patch[*]Gum[*]Puffer[*]Cold Turkey?

She tried cold turkey for 3 days and was going crazy.....

I dont want her to be on some alternative like Gum or patch that gives her way too much nicotine and gets her more addicted.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Mackie

1/2-1 cigarette per day is not smoking.

Tell her to go cold turkey and make her stick to it.

Well, maybe you start her off with one of those patches that you use toward the end of quitting phase, with less nicotine. Or, I don't know if you can do this, but maybe you can cut them in half or something.

The gum is terrible, that patch is significantly dangerous. She can chew regular gum, though, it helps. 1/2-1 cigarettes a day is nothing. Tell her to just go cold-turkey and it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, I tend to agree 1/2 - 1 per day isn't alot.....But nevertheless, she has a problem and gets upset enough when she can't have one that it leads me to believe she has a small addiction.

My dad went cold turkey, and it worked the first time (he used to smoke pipe in Greece). Just don't let her go back to it. Once she's a turkey, keep her a turkey. :p

Lol. I hear it all the time. People who aren't smokers complain about how they can't quit, dunno why. I assume there is some sort of "sexiness" in being addicted to something and trying to quit, an attempt to get attention perhaps? Try a pack a day for several years, and I can go cold turkey. I've seen heavy smokers of 20+ years just quit, but it is extremely difficult. 0.5 - 1 cig a day is not smoking, tell her to simply stop smoking them and get over it.

Cold-turkey and REGULAR chewing gum. Orbit is excellent. She's smoking very little, so her brain's physical requirement of nicotine will diminish in a day or two. What's hard is the phychological need for a cigarette that's hard to let go. Keep her occupied, don't let her mind go idle. And let her know that you love her :)

Probably more of a mental addiction than physical. She has to find a new outlet for her stress.... maybe going to the gym or some other physical activity?

She smokes 1/2-1 CIGARETTE a day? Or 1/2-1 PACK a day? If she only smokes one a day, she's not addicted.

When my life was going good I quit cold turkey it lasted until my life took a dive. The patches/gum/drugs dont work its all in the persons head. You can't quit if you dont wanna quit. If you wanna quit its as simple as waking up and not smoking.

I also don't consider 1 Cig a day addicted. She's probably addicted to the "new smoker" buzz (which most smokers can agree that the 1st smoke in the morning is the best of the day simply for the buzz).

Same thoughts here, pack or single cigarette?

Start replacing the her cigarettes with those nicotine free things, if they still make them. Hoefully she won't notice the label and the cigarette itself.

Quitting smoking's easy. I've done it a hundred times. :) I quit for good by tapering off. After I got to where I was smoking only every few days, it slowly stopped tasting good. Once I quit enjoying it, it was easier to quit. But, yeah, she won't quit until she wants to quit. I mean, would you quit drinking sodas just because they gave you bad breath and were bad for you? All that said, come on. One cigarette a day? If she can't beat that tiny dose of nicotine, you better pray she never gets ahold of a real drug. Maybe you can displace the habit?

Shortly before quitting, I read something interesting. I've lost the reference, but the gist of the argument is that people don't tend to quit things because of the benefits of quitting. When people successfully quit things, they quit in spite of something. I guess it's the adversarial nature of framing the quitting that way. I don't know if it's significant, placebo, or conincedence, but I quit almost immediately after trying that thought experiment. Like this: "I'm quitting even though it means I'll be the odd man out at the bar, or that it means I'll have to not light up when I'm hanging out with my friends. I'm doing it in spite of how much I like to smoke." Within a week, I had stopped smoking. Again, dunno if it is real, coincidence or placebo.

Yeah it's 1/2 a cig to 1 per day....

When stress kicks in it can be more, and honestly she could be lying and smoking more, but I seriously doubt it......

I'll get her chewing regular gum....

As far as getting her to "smoke" something else....she does plenty of that.....

:)
