Girlfriend having dog put down tomorrow

I will be there with her already. Her dog is ancient and is in bad shape. It's a tough thing to do for her.

Is there anything you can recommend I do for her? A card is the only thing I can come up with, and that seems trite.

Get her a new dog

Worst idea ever

I agree. Unless your girlfriend is 5 years old, it'll only make her feel worse. Just take her out on a nice suprise date. Something exciting preferably, to take her mind off it.

*ahem*

Dear Shelly (1),

I know it breaks your heart to say goodbye to Fluffy today. He/She has been a friend for you when your own family disowned you over that whole Goth/Animal Sex Thing. But now he/she's old, feeble and has become an emotional and financial burden on you. You are doing the right thing for Fluffy, for yourself, and frankly, for me...you know, the guy that's had to put up with this bulllshit crying crap you've been doing for the past year.

Yours Truly,
Interchange

Sometimes people try to hard to make others feel better in situations such as this and it can actually make it worse. Condolences with a shoulder to cry on is best. The person in need will surely let you know in their own subtle ways if more is necessary.

If really depends on the person. The best thing to do is just "be there" for her and try to gauge what see needs by how she handles it.

For instance, it might be a good idea to clean up her apt/home and remove all of the dogs toys, etc. However, she could also react badly to that.

Does she have a lot of photos of the dog? You could buy a nice photo album and fill it with photos of the dog. Or maybe just get one nice photo and get a good quality frame for it.

P.S. You could also suggest that during a 30 day mourning period you two should only use the "doggy style" position out of respect for her animal.

Or, you can do like I did years ago after the girl I was seeing had her (admittedly cute) ancient Pomeranian cremated. I picked up the little wooden box that the ashes and bone fragments were in, and shook it, repeatedly saying "Fluffy? Fetch the stick...fetch the stick!!!!" She was both shocked and semi-almost-amused. When she chided me for dishonoring her dead fleabags' memory, I chided her for decorating her otherwise stylish apartment with the small coffin containing the charred remains of a small animal. The argument was over quickly and I still got the nookie.

She does scrapbooking. I will make sure we put together a few pages for snowbear together. Great suggestion!

Mourn with her. And when she's not busy mourning, keep her mind distracted and busy. No slow-paced movies, or anything. Stay away from Milo & Otis.

Take a ride down the coast and go here, it will cheer her up 😀

Watch some movies, my suggestions:

Cujo
Benji
Mans Best Friend
All Dogs go to Heaven

j/k...

A nice dinner sounds good or stay at home with her and just be there for her.

I've had to do it before. I wouldn't recommend trying to distract her necessarily, the last thing I wanted to do was try and forget right after it happened. The best thing you can do is hold her while she cries, because I sure as hell bawled my ass off, and I wish I had had a boyfriend at the time to do that for me.
