Girlfriend has heart problems... please help

Phokus

Lifer
Hey guys, my girlfriend has been having heart problems for a while now. Sometimes she says her heart beats too fast and it can be painful. I am forcing her to see a doctor next week though... I remember reading about a simple test that a doctor can do to see if there is any problem with the heart. I think it's called an echocardiogram or ekg or something like that? Anyone know? I'm really paranoid about her health now and i want them to do anything and everything to make sure she's ok.

EKG/ECG are the exams.. they are very easy.. basically you just lay there with electrodes hooked up to your body for a few minutes so they can get a reading.

That being said.. if she's having heart pains.. take her to the hospital.

If there is any indicator of pain, you should probably get her to a heart doctor immediately. Don't take it too lightly..

Does your girlfriend smoke? Take sports supplements such as fat burners?

Go see a specialist. I have problems with my heart (MVP) and had to have an EKG and sonogram. The test are painless and they will be able to tell what exactly is wrong. Does she have any family members with heart problems? Be sure to keep us updated!

My mom had bouts of rapid heart beat a while ago.

It would hit her all of a sudden, her heart would race usually for a min or two but sometimes up to 10min.

After several tests / trips to the cardiologist she was diagnosed with Tachycardia.

A "simple" arthroscopic surgery to do some "fixes" in her heart worked wonders. She says they went in and "cut" the short circuit.

Get her to a specialist. (I know that's what you're doing)

Good luck.

i had an echocardiogram 2 years ago because they thought i had a heart murmur and the same thing that was believed that Abe Lincoln had...i think it's called Marfen syndrome. but echocardiograms are easy...they just take awhile. its just laying on a table for almost an hour while they look at your heart with an ultrasound.

Yup, that's what I have. It is not that bad, you have to cut down on caffeine and sugar intake. My heart will start beating very fast sometimes but it never lasts longer than 20 seconds. The only major problem is that I get the sharp pains in my chest. It feels like someone stabbing you with an ice pick if you try to breath.

I had to cut my caffine intake down to a cup of coffe in the morning & one in the evenine, too bad - I love coffee.
Sugar intake doesn't seem to make any change at all.

The most concerning thing at first was the 'Thrill' that momentary dizzyness when the beat pulsed backwards.
25 years laater - with the cutting down of coffee as a stimulant, I can't recall the last incident.

Skinny people problem - kinda like part of Marfans

Heart patient here, have had 2 open heart procedures and 1 transposition of the great vessel, was born with a congenital issue. DO NOT SCREW AROUND WITH THIS, GO TODAY. If it's nothing, fantastic, nothing lost but a little time, if it's something, you're treating it before it can develop. I know this is just a message board and there's some real bs advice going around sometimes, but trust me on this. PM me if you like. EKG's are good for seeing your rhythm, and will tell the doctors alot of information, sinus rate, atrial beat, etc, but please, go today. Leave work, leave school, wherever. Just go.
Taking a chance with this is not worth the possible outcome. I waited for my second open heart procedure and there was a hole the size of a quarter between my ventricles (from a baffle they made when I was 4 1/2). Go now, have I stressed that enought?

The symptoms you described could be a lot of things, but if there is no pain and she's not getting dizzy or having severe headaches, it's probably nothing serious.

i'll bet it's nothing serious although it definitely warrants being checked into.
and she is probably making it worse by thinking about it so much. it's amazing how we can actually control our heartrate if we put our mind to it.

again, since no one here has had actual experience with heart issues, don't be the fool and think you know it's nothing serious. If it is, who cares. Time lost, little bit of cash gone, but peace of mind. If it is something, and I hope it's not, better to find out.
