I would have fainted if that were me. No offense to anyone but those sailors (or whoever were holding the flag) were probably offended that she couldn't even remember the nation's anthem.

Dude come on... I forgot the words to Away in a manger once during a performance... being in front of people will do that crap to you man... stuff you KNOW, you can't recall, just like if a professor in class calls on you for an answer and it surprises you, your mind goes blank.

agreed.
I understand being nervous but that girl practiced, and should have known the words (I'm sure she does). It's just the fact that we hear this song ever since we are born, and for those people in the armed force holding the flag, it must have been slightly offending that the girl forgot the country's song that they fight for. I do agree that what the coach did was very upstanding, but I still stand by what I originally said.

SHe looked pretty young I highly doubt that the sailors were offended. being in front of A crowd that big would tense up anyone not use to it. I saw that clip on tv she went back like a year later and sung it again.

She probably shouldn't have been laughing while singing after when she started singing again but she was nervous I guess.

Doesn't matter how much you practice. Stepping in front of thousands of people like that (for perhaps the first time), and then having that one stumble would do most anyone in. Once you make a mistake like that and you're already nervous, there's very little chance you're going to recover...especially for someone her age (or at least based on how young she appears to be). As for the servicemen, I find it hard to believe that any of them would be offended by that. I'm sure they would've clapped along with the rest of the crowd had they not been holding that flag.

you don't know what you're talking about. you'd probably choke in a similar situation. EVERYONE gets stage fright at some point; i've heard many big name acts say this in interviews. the fact that she was singing such an important song only increases the pressure on her.

One other thing to consider. Its a lot easier to remember the words to a song when you start from the beginning and go straight through than to start in the middle.

Have you ever had to perform in front of a significant number of people?

Kudo's to the coach. I've done a lot of public speaking over the last few years and I remember doing school performances (Big bad wolf in 3 little pigs in elementary school) where that stuff was brutal. Totally awesome that he bailed her out. Even better to hear that she got a second chance

Cool of the coach to step up. Notice most of the crowd jeered right away and didn't join in to help.

Heck I screw up ordering at the drive thru and there's no spotlight or audience of thousands there. She got tripped up, didn't do anything objectionable. Unlike a lot of celebs who are offensive in that they won't bother to learn the words or overdo ridiculously.

Well it wasn't just stage fright from being in front of the crowd in the arena, it was a nationally televised play-off game. So she was performing infront of millions of people.

And the 99 out of 100 wouldn't help her comment, seems more like it should be 1 in 20,000 as no one else there tried to help they all just either stood there or boo'd her.

I agree that the coach did a great thing by helping her out. I've sang duets before and forgot the words once. It was in the middle of a solo and had a blank in my head. Could not remember the words at all. My gf (now wife) quickly sang with me and finished the song together.

Natalie Gilbert (the girl in the clip) is actually a relative of mine (by marriage). I usually only see her at Christmas, but she has always been able to sing really well. I think she actually won a competition to get to sing the anthem at that game.

AFAIK, she had never sung in front of that many people before and she just got nervous and forgot the words. You see it happen all the time, even to professional singers.

I think this clip is wonderful...the pressure on a 14-year old to sing in front of that crowd must have been huge, but the coach and then the crowd really jumped in to help....

the best part of this clip occurs at 1 minute, 55 seconds in (1:55) when the seamen in front of her have this look of "holy cow what the crap's going on!!!"
