So, I know there are many girls that play games, but not as much as I wish! BUT if you are a girl gamer, how did you get into gaming, what kind of games do you play, and list your top 5 favorites.

I'll start

I got into gaming when I was about 9 or 10 when I got my first computer. It was a hand-me-down so it was one of those towers that was almost as tall as me. The first game I ever played was Quake. The original first Quake. We would LAN in the house, my brothers, my dad and myself. Then I stopped cause the computer died, but then I got a new Dell like 5 years ago maybe, started playing games like The Sims and Battlefield 1942, and some games through Steam. My friends at school decided to challenge me by saying if they picked one random game I have never played before they'd be able to kick my ass. So of course I took the challenge and they chose Day of Defeat Source. So I kicked their asses and just got addicted to that game. I would pub it a lot and that's where I met one of my best friends, Jason. He introduced me to competitive gaming. So now I LOVE playing competitively. I'm not the best out there but I'm alright. :p Anywho, that's how I got really into gaming. Now I've been doing competitive gaming for about 2-3 years. I also met the love of my life through gaming so yay.

The kind of games I play include, RPGs, FPS, Strategy games, um really anything but those are my top 3 genres. I also love any type of game that is legally Free (I hate stealing).

My Top 5 favorite games:
1. Day of Defeat: Source
2. Battlefield 1942/2/2142
3. Second Life (Yeah I make money with this game, can't go wrong)
4. Warcraft 3 NOT World of Warcraft lol
5. Guitar Hero(I know initially it wasn't a PC game, now it is, so HA)

Seems family is a way that a lot of females get into gaming. I know my sister probably never would've played games if it wasn't for myself or my brother playing them often. She usually served as cannon fodder for our 1337ness though ;).

The Sims

Why is it that every girl absolutely and undyingly 's The Sims?

I'll do it if there's no demo. I don't really like warezing it up, but the one thing I hate more is spending my well-deserved money on a game that sucks.

You should try DDR instead of GH. Personally I enjoy DDR more so but they actually complement each other quite well. I played DDR for a bit, stopped and played GH3 then went back to DDRU2 and my ability to recognize patterns was a lot better than it was when I stopped. I'm still curious if people will hack the PC version to add songs to it... I... umm.. acquired it... to see ;).

Although the female gamer population is a minority compared to male gamers a good many play the MMOs. I've met many online while gaming and they can be every bit as competitive as the men. A lot of them can talk smack and cuss as well if not better too. I see quite a few couples, married and unmarried, teams out there in the various MMOs.

my girlfriend wasnt a gamer.... then I introduced a harry potter game to her, then CS:Source, then an alt char in wow, now she has her own account in full epics :)

Getting a wii soon so i'm sure she'll play that.

Just waiting to introduce her to fallout 3 and re4 on the wii.

My fiancee played WoW, but quit when I sold my char. She tried Warcraft III, but that only lasted about a month. Lately it's Peggle, and TF2 whenever she's over at my place. We'll go head to head at Worms occasionally too.

I've tried DDR, I just don't like the cheap mats that slip out from under you (It has happened and it hurt). The closest to DDR I get is playing Dance Online by Acclaim. It's a free game and it's semi fun.

That's a problem women have in general ... ;).

My wife digs the Harry Potter games, I see the next step is CS:Source.

I agree with the philosophy of you can't push them. Let them enjoy it with you and eventually you will get that rare gem of coming home and seeing them gaming on their free time. Here is a quick guide:

Popcap games -> interactive games (wii, ddr, guitar hero) -> fun younger games (harry potter, viva pinata, sims, etc.) -> teamwork PC games (wow, TF2, CS:S) -> then they become gamers.

My ex's sister considered herself a gamer, but I'd never seen her venture outside of shiny and fluffy games like DDR, Mario, or Kingdom Hearts, never touched the blood n' guts territory such as GTA and UT2k4 that her boyfriend was into.

This one girl in our guild/clan on the other hand, played everything we played, CS: Source, Battlefield 2, DoTA, Natural Selection, WoW..etc. etc. She was extremely competitive too, we used to see her on xfire with around 40 hours weekly playtime(freelance writer with husband away on Navy duty) and in the top ranks of whatever server she was in, it was kinda amusing that she would stop at nothing to completely dominate and pwn noobs, but if we were getting our asses handed to us by the other team, she'd be the first one to alt-f4 in a huff.
