A 17-year-old Sheboygan girl was charged Thursday with misdemeanor sexual assault for allegedly having sex with her 14-year-old boyfriend.

Norma J. Guthrie, of 1034-A Michigan Ave., was in court a day after a 17-year-old Sheboygan boy was charged with a felony for allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old girlfriend.

Guthrie admitted having sex with the boy between 10 and 15 times, according to a complaint charging her with fourth-degree sexual assault. She faces a maximum of nine months in jail, if convicted.

Police began investigating when the boy's mother reported he might be staying overnight at Guthrie's house, the complaint said. Guthrie told police the boy had claimed to be 16.

On Wednesday, Alan J. Jepsen, 17, of 1416 New York Ave., was charged for allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old girl who he claimed told him she was 16. Jepsen is facing a count of felony second-degree sexual assault, which carries a maximum prison term of 25 years.

The girl, who may be pregnant, had run away from home and was staying with Jepsen, a complaint said.

Assistant District Attorney Jim Haasch, who filed both complaints, said the misdemeanor charge was filed in part because Guthrie has no prior criminal record. But online court records show Guthrie has a pending charge of misdemeanor battery, filed in October.

Haasch would not say whether Jepsen has a prior juvenile record ? which is typically sealed ? but the boy has no adult charges listed in online court records.

Haasch also said the cases are different because Guthrie's boyfriend is "almost 15," with a birthday in February. Jepsen's girlfriend turns 15 in April.

Jepsen is in jail in lieu of a $1,000 cash bond, while Guthrie was released on a $1,000 signature bond after her initial court appearance Thursday, jail officials said.

Both Guthrie and Jepsen were charged as adults. All suspects age 17 and older are charged as adults by default in Wisconsin, though they can seek a waiver into juvenile court.

Double Standards FTL.

This is how it's always been, and will continue to be. Sadly, we're the oppressed minority in pretty much every regard when it comes to women. Equal rights my ass, it's completely reversed now and all you need to do is find a rich guy and marry him for a year then you're set for life via alimony.

Great justice system victory.

Yeah, those two months make such a huge difference.

So the girl was sheboygan in Sheboygan? lol

And.. fuckin archaic sex laws + double standard bullshit.

When are we going to realize that at 14, you are very much biologically ready to have sex? And people are going to do it. A lot.

I've run out of "Luckiest Boy In The World" medals. Anyone got one for the 14 year old?

biologically yes, mentally, not so much. But 14-17 ain't exactly the same as 14-25 would be or something.

The law is supposed to be blind and treat everyone equally. When you have prosecutors like this however, what do you expect?

Perhaps you should write to the prosecutors office and suggest they upgrade her charges or downgrade his charges, in the name of fairness and justice. :eagle;

 QFMFT.

No way should any of this be illegal, and especially not with such a large discrepancy between the potential sentences.

I should point out that both of these scenarios are completely legal in Canada (age of consent is 14).

And hell, how old was King Tut when he died? Early to mid teens? He probably had a damn harem to himself and control of an empire.

there was a girl in my high school who was pregnant with her second child by a guy 5 years older than her before she turned 16.

First, ignoring the story, whoever wrote the article and edited it (if someone did) should be fired. They flip from 14 year old boyfriend to 14 year old girlfriend. Jesus, I re-read my work emails and even posts on this site at least two times to make sure what I said makes sense.

That said, this is fucking bullshit. What is their justification for the different charges for the boy and girl? State laws perhaps, cause they're both minors? The guy (17 I'm guessing) gets a felony while the girl, 14, gets a misdemeanor? What a load of bullshit.

All this because teenagers are doing what adults take for granted.

Sex can be found in all aspects of our life - entertainment, religion, politics, education.

Sex is a part of our instinctive nature.

Why the hell do we treat kids like dirt just because of their age, then secretly indulge in it? :frown:

Not sure what the big deal is. I think I was 14 (freshman) when I had sex with a junior who was 17. I may have just turned 15. It was not uncommon for people in high school to be dating younger/older (not that they were all having sex). Like freshman/soph dating jr/sr and some of the jr/sr girls dating college guys which is definitely a no no. This was also an upper middle class NYC suburb school too.

Also what Eli said. A lot of older cultures married women for the intent of bearing young at 14-16yo. While I agree in protecting the youth from sexual predation of adults, charging a 17yo with a felony for being with a 14yo is overstepping it IMO. Counseling sure but felony?

jesus christ. 25 years max for the boy. talk about getting fucked, and not in a good way.

versus 9 months for the girl :Q

and who files the charges anyway? I guess "the state" vs. the defendant?

The whole age of consent thing should be done away with in favor of a tiered age difference limit.

Something like:

Age 14 = legal to have sex with 14 - 17 year olds
Age 15 = legal to have sex with 14 - 18 year olds
Age 16 = legal to have sex with 14 - 19 year olds
age 17 = legal to have sex with 14 and up
> age 19 = legal to have sex with 17 and up

Can change it from legal to guaranteed misdemeanor for either sex for greater disparities or whatever. Just fix it so things like what happened in the article can't happen.

Gah, I didn't understand why these 17 year olds were being treated as adults and the paper was allowed to report her address.

this cleared it up for me.

Summary: Wisconsin used to treat 18+ as adult like everyone else, changed to 17 in '95, and is thinking about changing back.

Depends on the person. Some are ready at that age, and some are not.

I suspect that society as a whole would be a lot more mature about the whole thing if we didn't coddle our children so much and try to "protect" them from sexuality.
