Went to the liquor store today and was poking around the Gin section. I haven't tired many but I do like Tanqueray and New Amsterdam. I really didn't feel like dropping $25+ on a bottle but I wanted to try something new.

Ended up buying a bottle of Bombay London Dry Gin ($19)

Normally I just do Gin and Tonics or Gin Gins (Gin and ginger ale)
Any recommendations? I might make a gin martini

Hmm, let me know if those are any good.

The only gin I've had was absolutely terrible. Like varnish or something. Yeck.

bombay is my choice, esp. bombay sapphire.

a gin martini is a martini - anything else is not a martini. use just a tiny bit of vermouth.

other than that, i just drink G&T with fresh limes. rosie's only in emergencies.

If I'm not spending the extra on Sapphire I just prefer Tanqueray. And Tanqueray always for tonics, Bombay vs Tanq dependant on mood for martinis. You can also do a gin gimlets (ie, a REAL gimlet) which are fantastic.

Gin is always my go to liquor. Most people don't like it.

I prefer beef eater.
I'v been meaning to try that. Sometimes it's hard justifying spending more than $20 on gin.

I;v been told pour a bit of vermouth in to the glass then swirl it around a bit then pour the extra out.

Too floral for me...I prefer gins like Bluecoat, Junipero, and Boodles (great gin for the price).

Boodles!

I really don't like Sapphire. It makes horrible G&T for my taste.

Hendricks is quite awesome. A bit pricey, though.

Salmon Rushdie was on NPR the other week (City Arts and Lectures. I believe), and he was telling a story of Kingsley Amis describing the perfect Martini:

You place the gin in a glass with a few olives, orient a bottle of vermouth just next to the glass of gin at a position such that the sun's light passes directly through the bottle of vermouth, and into the gin standing next to it.

:D

Order a Hendrick's Martini when out at a bar sometime. It is awesome. 750ml is usually $34 or so.

that's what I do. sometimes I'll poor a little in with the ice, gin and shaker, then pour that into the glass (NO ICE in beverage!).

then some olive juice. yummy

OK, now I'm part of that crowd that will tell anyone that there is only one type of Martini known to man (because that is a fact), and it involves:

Gin
Dry Vermouth (vapors)
olives

but I gotta say....replace olives with 2 fat lychees, and you have an awesome beverage that compliments gin quite nicely.

:\

Try it with Cran-Rasberry in a 32-ounce juggler (1:2 or 1:3 ratio) and after 2-3 of them you will wonder what Faust was talking about.

I have found most don't drink the classic drinks properly. They have emo'd them up.

Gotta agree, I've been liking Sapphire less and less as the G in my G&T. It is it decent for martinis? I don't drink them often but since I have a 1L bottle of the stuff only 25% consumed I may as well find a good use for it.

So last night I ended up making a G&T because I didn't have any sweetened lime juice.
Do I just go to the grocery store and get sweetened lime juice? Or do I need to make it?

Thanks guys

Since no one in their right mind would buy a liter of lime juice for a hundred frackin dollars, yes you can buy some bottles of it in the store.
