Had to re-image my business laptop and forgot to slap CS5 on it before I left for the weekend, now I need to work on a poster and using GIMP is almost impossible.

The whole thing seems like it was constructed by someone with the common sense of a retarded cat.

You are too used to Photoshop. I've been using GIMP for years and Photoshop seems to have a horrible design.

GIMP is a classic example of why I don't buy into the "free software movement"

Tons of free software is absolutely horrible.

GIMP only has three devs doing part time work. How many hundreds of people work on Photoshop and get paid?

Horrible logic. There's plenty of crap software out there that you have to pay for too.

Most of the internet runs on free software by the way.

As usually, haters of free work expect that GIMP generates money for them.

GIMP has infinite ratio of features/price thus beats photoshop if I don't plan to sell my work. In other words, GIMP is great for casual editing.

Now if you want to profit from photo editing, pay with your wallet and don't look back. Adobe needs you.

You gotta use the right tool for the job, regardless of whether it's open source or not. However, very often people assume that the "right" tool is simply the one they know, which is often not the case (not saying that holds true for the OP necessarily).

This is especially true of software that they don't have to purchase themselves (e.g., MS Office, Visual Studio, or MATLAB being used at work). If they spent $500 worth of time learning open-source alternatives (e.g., OpenOffice, Eclipse, or Python, respectively), they'd end up as productive but reduce their overhead cost by a few thousand dollars a year (or in the case of MATLAB potentially many thousands of dollars).

Try Paint.NET.

Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk

I tried paint.net last month to see if I could skip upgrading from PS CS _1_ from 2003.
It was missing the bitmap editing features I needed.

It's free so I can't complain, but I also can't use it since it's so lacking in power.

gimp is actually very very good. You just need to realize that if youve never used it before its just like when you first started using ps. These programs can do Quite a lot and when your first starting out nothing seems to make sense. Its not the program its the user. Since i have never used a mac system trying to problem solve on that system would make me go mad. On windows its easy since im used to it. Doesnt mean eithor system is bad just that there is a learning curve.

Gimp took me a very long time to get used to. I found its interface not particularly good, but it is free so as I've spent more time with it I'm more used to it. I don't do a great deal with it but for free software it's really excellent actually.

The difference between PS and GIMP is that Photoshop is designed for actual users to be able to use it, if they weren't able to use it they wouldn't buy it. GIMP is designed by IT people who have little concept of the end user experience.

I'll settle this.

Gimp: Terribly thought out UI and performance. Gets the job done but it's terribly painful to use.

Photoshop. Expensive, bloated POS that is poorly written and eats memory like crazy.

I use Gimp, and it works great for me. It's highly extensible, and respects your rights. I wouldn't use Photoshop if it were given to me.
