I want to paste an image on a background and use that as a wallpaper. The image I want to set on the background is small so it's not filling up the entire screen like a wallpaper should. That's why I want to use a bigger black background image (1600 X 1200) and paste the smaller image in a central position on that black background and use that as the wallpaper.

Is there a way to do this in GIMP?

There might be an easier way, but here's how I'd do it: open up the image, then go to Image>Canvas Size. Put in 1600x1200 or whatever you want, hit the "center" button, then hit resize. Then go to Layer>Layer to Image Size. Finally, you can use the fill tool to make the border whatever color you want.

P.S., you've got a couple lines of white space at the end of your sig
