Ok, im going to the gym on monday for a muscle building program. Gimme tips to what i can do in addition to what the people at the gym are gonna tell me.

What i have at my disposal (out of gym):

2x 18 pound dumbells
1x excercise mat
1x tub of protein shake

Irrelivent but ya might feel like reading it:

Im just back from the pub, ive been drinkin wine all day and finished with a ton of beer and some apple sourz. Ive been pubbin and getting smashed all summer, since about june, since then my regular workouts become a semi-regular workout and then a whenever i can be bothered workout. My diet has gone down the tubes, from steak+fruit+carbs/protein NO FAT to mcdoncalds and chippys whenever i feel like it. But what started it all, my weak kinda skinny mate whos been working out for a little while beat me at arm wrestling, both arms. When he did i yelled out "GOD F**KING DAMNIT!!" "WHAT THE F**K!! HOW DID YOU WIN?? STEROID TAKING JACK*SS" But no, facing the cold hard facts ive gotta get my fit n healthy lifestyle back. SO! Send me advice, send me links damnit guys help me here, ive gotta beat this guy, ive said i would by newyears and if i get no tips from you guys i just hope the program will do it for me. Me and this mate have a competitiveness going, im gonna beat him, hes even said i will, but if i dont pull my finger out my a** and get to some serious work, ill lose at newyear. I DONT WANT TO LOSE!!! SO ATOT WORKOUT GURUS GIVE ME ADVICE!!!

edit: yeah... the friend in question, he sits and plays world of warcraft most days, just to give an idea of how far gone ive gotten.

Find a partner so you can coach and motivate each other. It seriously helps people stick to a routine longer than if you did it alone. (at least for the average joe)

I love doing situps and pushups - they require no equipment; just a little floor space. They're so basic yet so powerful in helping you tone and start building muscles in key areas.

Drop the fats, as you already know. I have never been into the protien/whey crap, but whatever works for ya. I just eat less and eat healthier when I can. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy a slice of pizza here or there. You can't deprive yourself of enjoyment foods because it can make it very hard to keep eating healthy because you may find yourself missing those foods a lot.

Keep healthy snack foods within a quick grab. Instead of reaching for chips, grab some grapes, a banana, or some Triscuits. (my fav) I also enjoy having peanuts and celery + peanut butter on hand as well.

I wish you the best of luck!

thats actually a good tip if you drink you will loose the muscle you are building when you take protein shakes

I disagree with what you said but do not really feel like going into it all right now...

So I guess this is pretty much a useless post...

Well ive had 3 partners, they all gave up pretty quickly so i learned to go it solo. My current wannabe gym partner is the dude thats made me drink so much. We're kinda alike in that when he says fancy a beer? ill say yeah and have about 10 and vice versa. No lamewad "i dont drink/party" flatmates for me this year! oh no! Theyre fun lovin people!

Yes my diet is s**t because i drink lots i eat fast food afterwards (as you do) and that dont help. Apart from that, my cupboard in halls consists of nutri grain bars, snakajak cakes (cardboard probably has more nutrition than snackajaks but dont taste as good :p ) and the freezers got steaks and chips. Also some oven cooked fish. The hangover bag (my name for it) is full of fruit, which i eat from when hungover, its in my room filled with apples and carrots, used to have banannas but theyre all eaten since they go off faster.

I cant remember what got me into pushups/situps.... really wish i could, but nowadays i dont like emm, theyre a chore that gets neglected unlike back in the day when they were a... well not somthing enjoyable... but you know, nothing i would struggle with too much. I just gotta do some kinda warm up, prep myself, get water, and get back into them again!! Attack emm head on!

Gotta do this as my current plan is like this : Go to gym and do program im given, then go home and drink protein shake, then later when i feel better do a shortish workout with those dumbells i got and the mat for the pushups/situps. 4x25 pushups and 3x30 situps. Maybe less considering my bells wobbles when i hit it and i cant really do crap compared to before. I dunno ill do what i can!

I'm in a similar boat (having that stuff at home, not the mad drinking :p), what can I do outside the gym with the above mentioned stuff?

you need to make 3 major changes in your lifestyle &
that's highly improbable in the short run.

radically cut back on the alcohol.
change diet.
exercise regularly.

concentrate on changing 1 thing permanently first
(e.g., drinking). the most important thing to develop
is willpower, because beating your friend at arm-wrestling
isn't sufficient motivation for all 3 changes.

You won't build muscle with 36 pounds of iron.

Theyre dumbells though, i dont own a barbell as theres no space for it and my bench is at home anyways so it wouldnt be too much use. 18 pounds a dumbell, they look pretty big, i can do about 12 curls with each one. I can push it to 20 but then ill need a longer rest and ill probably do 1 less set.

I can cut back on the alchohol easy, i dont need to drink, its just fun. I got till newyears to get back into things again as thats when i said i would beat him by. My diet will improve when the drinking gets cut back on, as theyre kinda linked.

My other motivations are living longer, looking/feeling fitter! Kinda means looking/feeling fitter than this friend that beat me. We got this competitive thing going.

Hows this for small lifestyle changes:

1. Drinking water only from now on. Maybe orange juice... theyre both good right?

2. Absolutely no fast food until new years, none, nada, zilch! Then after new years, only have fast food every now n then.

3. Steak/tuna for protein, and carby good foods like bread/oven chips arent too bad right? plus oven food that has more protein than fat, bernard mathews turkey steaks is a good example. Already got my hangover bag of fruit so im good for that. Cereal too, eat in the mornings instead of hang over the loo and sick up what i ate last night.

4. 1 protein shake after workout, 200ml of milk with 3 spoons of whey protein powder. It says your supposed to eat that stuff like 3 times a day, but i aint going for world champion and that stuffs £20 a tub so... 1 should be enough after workout right?

5. Stick to the program the guy at the gyms gonna give me!
