I'm confused on what is required for Gigabyte ethernet connectivity.

Will a standard cat5 cable handle the transfer rates for 15-20ft. distances? Or does cat6 or cat7 come into play here? As I understand it there are cat6 patch cords, blocks and inserts but the standards aren't published so there is confusion as to what exactly can be done...

Can someone clarify my confusion on this please...
