I've been spending time on NNTP servers for almost two decades. From the text-based software (NNTP client), through Xnews (until recently) to the god awful software that is now pushed. My problem:
Binaries group went from the usual 100K posts/month to something outlandish. Instead of seeing 2-3 months worth of indexed posts in said group something like >100 Million are being advertised. This is a problem for most legacy clients as they are not designed to download tens or hundreds of millions of article headers.
I take a group in question with +100 Million articles and have Xnews client grab 2 Million of the most recently indexed article headers. It labors, but on my newest PC it only takes a few minutes. When completed it ports only 1/100 the number of articles headers exist in the 2 Million index span.
I figured group was broke, its index or something else. Tried several other groups and the same thing is happening. Tried on another PC, used other NNTP clients, etc. and problem can be reproduced at will.
This behavior started in the last 3-4 months and has now made the paid-for NNTP service useless. Xnews was developed more than a decade ago and while downloading said 2 Million article headers consumes nearly 2GB of Physical memory.
I have 16GB of Physical memory, but when Xnews reached 2GB of consumed memory it reports Out Of Memory as it isn't designed to use more. This makes venturing into Binaries groups impossible. Opened a ticket with Giganews support and they are looking at it, but I doubt it will be resolved. I think Giganews may have changed hands, or something, as the indexing seems way, way off.
