Giganews and Comcast?

That's what I was a little afraid of. I haven't used Usenet since Comcast was @home, and had their own news server.

So on the sign up page, they want your full name and Comcast username. That mean no more spoofing your email when posting, to avoid spam?

Anyone who thinks Usenet is dead should pay attention to what happened to Comcast when they announced it would be cut from their service. It was quite ugly, hence the arrangement with Giganews.

Any newsreader will let you put whatever you want in the email/user ID header. Your news provider has no control over that.

But w/ the Comcast/Giganews server, you have to log on to the news server w/ a username and password it gives you after signing up. When you sign up, it has to be your @comcast.net email address. So is it still possible?

USEnet will never ever die.

there's some kind of 'no x: archive' option for doing that, but I dunno how it works.

comcast/giganews capped at 1Gb per month over here

NNTP uses a specific username and password that has nothing to do with what email you use to identify yourself in usenet posts. But you wouldn't be truly anonymous if that's what you're asking -- if you decided to start doing some heavy spamming and the complaints come in, the news provider can find out whose account it came from and take action.

There is no way your authentication info for the server will make it into your posts unless you put it there. The login info and what you put in the "From" field when you configure your reader are totally separate.
