8 times the speed? Oh man, Far Cry suddenly stopped kicking hardware in the pills. ;)
Now, if only they'd release something at a price point I'd be comfortable parting with money over ($200)...

That's GigaByte's problem, not nVidia's... FX6800 isn't that long. I'm seriously hoping that NV40 is released like NV25 was (same core, different clocks), though.

It's GeForce 6800 Ultra\GeForce 6800, they dropped the FX.

The key words they use in marketing is "up to"... not 8 times, up to 8 times. which could be anything from zero and upward. Kind of like those bulllhit weighloss gimmicks that promise weightloss of up to 15 pounds the first week, although the majority only loses a couple pounds.

i sincerely doubt pci-e will be mainstream before these cards are nearing eof - or if there will be any games requiring that kind of bandwidth. right now we're not taxing the agp bus; there's no performance gain from 4x to 8x... unless i'm missing something here?

Yea, PCI-E is a totally new interface, that lets the Video card communicate with the system faster in general. Or so i'm told by Tabb.

They don't even use the words speed or performance - "up to 8x the shading power", key words being "up to" and "power" a 5000HP tank is far more "powerful" than a 500HP sports car, but I think we all know which one is faster... Granted you'd probably want a 1000HP car over a 500HP one, but it rarely if never directly equates to 2x the speed or performance.

Since shader performance is pretty much where NV35 failed, I'd think that "up to" 8x that would be a significant gain in "real" performance...
Of course, I could be wrong; it IS launch day and some benchmarks would be fantastic right about now. ;)

It says up to 8x the previous generation.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the FX5200 part of the previous generation (NV3x) family?
It should easily have 8x the shader power of a 5200.

All I know is that I have the $250 in hand right now, ( sold my ATI 9800 Pro for $150 when the nvidia card gets here, ie 250 +150=400 bucks)
I'll be a proud nVidia owner when they get here :D

Bring'em ON!

tanks actually have less horsepower than sports cars but are even slower! not a valid comparison.

(and nice reasoning, fanbois. :) )

i think PCI express will be more use to Video editors from the kick off.......video editing requires a lot of bandwidth specially if u want to edit HDTV!!!

uh, gg_counting_chickens_before_they_hatch.

I mean, I hope NV40 is a monster too, but I'm certainly not going to call it the winner until it's proven itself in benchmarks and gaming tests....

No tanks have far more horsepower but WEIGH far more. The key here is the ratio of power to weight.

These idiots are comparing efficiency, not overall output. If the engine=GPU and the horsepower=FPS, the tank always wins. Now, if weight=transistors, yes, the NV40 may end up being LESS EFFICIENT, but it would still be MORE POWERFUL if it puts out more FPS.

Everyone clear now?

Uh I said nothing at all about it being a winner or not.
I'm just ready to get away from the ATI driver sets. This generation of nVidia cards will be a lot more competitive than the last, but I'm certainly not saying who is faster or not.

I'm using my first ATI card now (9800 Pro) and will be happy to get rid of it.

Sure, I bet nVidia's NEW drivers on their NEW card using the NEW architecture are going to be flawless.
