Hello,

I just built my first computer and I have a question. This is an X58 board and I'm wondering why the slow boot? Here is my system.

Mobo: Gigabyte GA EX58 UD3R
CPU: i7 920 Stock Cooler -
GPU: Powercolor Radeon ATI HD 4850
Memory: 6 GB OCZ DDR3 1600 (128000) Obsidian
PSU: Corsair CMPSU-850TX
Case: Cooler Master HAF 232

All Running at stock settings and it takes 60 seconds from when you press power, until you get to the desktop in win7/64. Is that normal?.

Thank you all.

Make sure that the proper graphics card type and slot is selected in your BIOS.

I have an X58 board from Gigabyte as well (EX58-UD5) with an i7 920. It does take a while to boot, because of the complexities of the board I suppose. Plus I have 6 HDDs hooked up and the hard drive detection part takes a few seconds.

I got same problem here. It takes about 90secs before I see MOBO logo. After I upgraded to ATI 5870 this is occurring. If I put my old NVIDIA 8800ultra MOBO logo appears instantenous. After I see MOBO logo, it boots up fine. I have a ASUS Striker Extreme. I worked with ASUS and could not find the problem. Since it only occurs with ATI card, checked XFX support and they said that it was a known problem with this particular manufacturer MOBO. I RMA'd video card to be on the safe side and same slow bootup. Sometimes I wonder if XFX just told me that to get me off their back... At the same time, I'm tempted to buy another MOBO from another company to see if boot up improves.

if you have AHCI enabled, it takes a little longer to boot because I think it turns the devices on one at a time. I am using the F9 and it boots up much quicker than whatever was on it before. I also have a UD5.

Update: I have resolved my issues.

I had the following issues.
1. Slow bootup. Took about 90sec to see MOBO logo.
2. PC was not powering on. After powering on, it would power off about 3-15secs. In odd scenarios it would power up fine but most cases not.

These issues occurred after upgrading video card from NVIDIA 8800ultra to ATI 5870. When placed old video card (8800 ultra) the above issues were not noticed.

I decided to replace MOBO (ASUS Striker Extreme) with GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775. After replacing MOBO, issues resolved as well. Looks like there was some type of compability is issues with new video card and old MOBO. I was a bit skeptic that new MOBO would resolve my issues.... but it did.

On a side note: I have my PC OC to 3.66 from 3Ghz and wondered if I can lower my vcore... and after testing with Intelburn test, I was able to lower my vcore from 1.5 to 1.475. This in turn reduced my Idle/Load temp by 2C.

Hello f650blue1, and welcome to the forums.

90 seconds for POST would be excessive, but it is pretty common for X58 chipset motherboards to take 10-20 seconds to POST, or longer if you have RAID enabled.

I don't have raid enabled. As previously mentioned, If I use my old nvidia card mobo logo appears instantaneosly and I did not have issues with my PC powering down either. I believe it was a compability issue bet old mobo and new video card.

Is there anything I can do to speed up the boot process? Can this problem be CPU related?

i'd check your ram settings, i had problems with my x58-ud3r with ocz memory with long boots and random hangs. I think my board was just picky with ram, i switched out with corsair and had no problems since. I have my sata on ACHI also.
