Hi, I have an EP45-UD3 and I was readjusting the internal fans one day when I struggled slightly to get the Sys_Fan1 fan plugged in. Eventually I got it and set the system up ready to be plugged in...
Now, this is where the problem started. The system turned on and I could see the |CPU fan spinning through the top of my Antec case, however it looked much slower and there was also a strange noise but I believe it was the CD drive, as I noticed later after taking it all apart that the drive kept trying to randomly seek even though there was no CD/DVD inserted.
I also smelt that infamous burning smell within a couple of seconds and so instantly turned the machine off. I didn't get any POST or at least nothing came through on the monitor.
I eventually breadboarded it and swapped memory and took all peripherals out leaving CPU/RAM/GPU and tried to at least get it to boot. AT this point I assumed it was just a glitch for whatever reason.
Anyway, later on I noticed something strange about the SYS_FAN1 header. There was a small piece of flat copper protruding out from just next to the socket and the area where it had seemingly come away from the board was singed.

has a picture that is as near as dammit exactly the same as the damage on my Gigabyte board, only it doesn't show the copper wire that mine still seems to have.
Ok, so the question is:
1. Is this something that could be fixed?
2. Do you think there is a chance the motherboard stopped booting because of the fan monitor seeing a problem or do you believe the entire motheerboard will have suffered damage somehow and th Sys_Fan1 header is just a part showing visible signs?
Any thoughts or tips etc would be interesting to read.
