Gigabyte P35-DS3R paired with Intel E6850 CPU

As the topic says, I'm looking for insight on what would be the best motherboard settings for this CPU. I realize that my CPU has a FSB of 1333 and my motherboard supports FSB 1333 as well. My RAM however is DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Cas Latency 4 Timing 4-4-4-12 (2x1GB TWIN2X2048-6400C4DHX).

I guess my question(s) is(are), what would be the best settings for this motherboard that would cause the least amount of bottle-necking in my system, due to the different speeds involved? I must admit, the memory portion of my question is my weakest link. I've read in several places that a 1:1 setup is most optimum, but doesn't always equate to any real noticable difference. Also, from what I gather, my DDR2 800 should actually be more than enough for this setup. Any insight would be helpful.

Additionally, I'm really not looking to do any overclocking at this point (never had an interest in it). Stability (obviously) is #1, and this rig will be used mainly as a gaming PC.

Thanks in advance.

i have that same mb with the e6850 paired with 2 x 1 Ballistix ddr2 800 and it works fine

you can actually oc it to 9 x 400 - 3.6GHz with only 1.3-1.35 vcore which shouldnt cause
any stability and temp issues

Yea, 3.6 seems to be the highest I can get to be stable w/ this combo. I have 4x1gb ddr2-1066 ballistix stix

This is my understanding as well. DDR2 = double data rate, meaning that 800 is 400 x 2. And until your CPU's FSB speed goes over 400, you are OK. My Q6600 for example runs 9 x 266, and 266 is nowhere near 400, so... no problem?

***I"m not saying this is accurate***, just that this is my understanding of it. Would love to see further replies on this, especially as it pertains to ratios and etc., and if I'm ttoally whacked.

Like I said, I wasn't planning on overclocking anything, but since I just drove back from frozencpu.com with a shiny new Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme and accessories, I may have to play a little. :D ...If you don't mind my asking, exactly which settings did you change on your mobo for your overclock? (I know I have some reading to do, because I'm new to OCing)

cpuz still reports mine at 1.08-1.1 at all times no matter how I change voltage. Core temp just shows the default vid of 1.35. Sadly, the only accurate voltage reading I can get outside of my bios is in uGuru.

Thanks for the info... I'll give it a try... just have to wait until the UPS guy drops the cpu off today.

The Abit P35 PRO is really one of the best MB's, but it has no RAID controler. If you dont need it, buy the ABIT.

DDR is short for double data rate. DDR is a type of SDRAM short for Synchronous DRAM. DDR2 is another type of SDRAM where voltage is reduced with other features that makes it allow to be clocked much higher than the DDR counterparts. (As you can see there are DDR2 sticks that can hit well over 1000Mhz)

DDR3 currently is the latest refresh, with mem voltage as low as 1.5V. Theres other things that can be talked about but that would make me go offtopic.

However one thing you had correct was about the FSB to Memory speed ratio. Currently the highest FSB is 333FSB (or 400 on the Xeons?). A FSB of 333Mhz require DDR2 667 (DDR2 533 is perfectly fine for a 1066FSB C2D if your not going to OC). The thing about the memory sticks that go over DDR2 667 i.e DDR2 800 and over are all intended to OC (or even maybve used for lower/tighter timings). So basically if your not OCing which is alot of people out there DDR2 667+ is actually a waste of money but DDR2 is so cheap i dont think it matters :p

Can you elaborate? I see you hit 4ghz. Is that on water?

I've started this thread:

http://www.hardforum.com/showt...1332036#post1031332036

can you add anything to it?

well i would just send you a pm but i cant see an option to do that..

as in for hardforums, such a pain not being able to use gmail... ill have to wait til an admin activates my account there

ive honestly had the cpu for about a week now and to be honestly i havent been able to get it orthos/prime stable for more then 2hrs

still need to test it out a bit more, ill keep you posted

ok it's not the mb coz I can do 6x525 w/ no issues...so i'm assuming it's the cpu..

8x460 (3.7GHZ) at 1.385 posts fine, boots in xp fine, can finish 3dmark 06 fine, but fails orthos. If I'm really only playing games, since it passes 3dmark 06 fine, should I not worry about it?

advice?

thx
