Gigabyte P35-DS3L & Heatsink Issues (CPU_FAN)

I just bought a new Gigabyte P35-DS3L and case. My PSU is less than a year old and is of good quality and has been running fine. I connect everything to my new setup, and at first it doesn't boot. The fans spin for 2 or 3 seconds and then it shuts down, nothing on the screen. I try turning the computer on and off a few times and the same thing happened.

So I unplug my PSU and make sure all the power cables are securely connected. I don't notice anything, but the next time I start the machine--voila--it boots and everything posts; ram, harddrives, cdrom drives, etc., but I also notice that my heatsink fan isn't spinning.

I check the BIOS and see my CPU temp warming up.

I shut down the computer and reconnect my heatsink fan to another connector, like SYSFAN_2, and the heatsink fan starts spinning.

So is the CPU_FAN connector on my mobo fried? Is there something I'm doing wrong or is there anything I can do to revive it? The heatsink is also new. It's a Freezer 7 Pro.

Thanks

I read somewhere that its the cpu smart fan control option in the bios.
someone said to disable the option and the problem went away.

I'll give it a shot once my OS install finishes. Last I checked my CPU was running at 29/30 celsius so I'm not too worried yet. Everything else is running nice. Thanks.

BTW, is it even likely or possible that some kind of power surge killed just the CPU_FAN or that just that component is broken?

Nothing is amiss. The board is not using the fan until it needs to, and will only run it as fast as is needed to keep it somewhat cool, using the CPU's temp as a guide. Some controls for it are in the BIOS.

That's what I thought--but then I disabled smart fan control and the thing still wouldn't spin. It was getting blistering hot to the touch, 60+ celsius.

I wanted to get vista up thinking that maybe some of Gigabyte's software would tell me more, so I just hooked the heatsink up to sysfan_2. Vista installs fine, and then it goes for a reboot... never comes back

The system shuts down and now it won't POST. I've checked my psu, cpu, ram, heatsink, all on my old build and everything's fine. So either the power switch on my case is busted (highly doubt it) or the motherboard somehow died. Sucks. I'm going to let it sit for a night and try again tomorrow morning... I really hope I don't have to RMA this.

If I do RMA, I want to test the power switch first. Does anyone recommend a good way to short the f-panel power pins? I don't have anything fancy. So, paperclips? tying wires?
