Gigabyte MB & SATA Controller with 2 SATA HDD problem

floppy

Hello,
Are there any particular pitfalls with the installing of 2 160 GB SATA disks on Gigabyte 4 SATA MB's ?

In this case the Bios sees the 2 SATA disks, SATA 00 Master and SATA 01 Master.
WinXP Pro SP2 sees the presence of the disk but is unable to format it correctly.

The system properties show that the HDD 00 has the UltraUDMA driver while the HDD 01 has NO Properties assigned at all.

Apart from a factory faulty disk, it was just bought new and sealed, are there any other tips regarding this type of SATA setup ?
I read on 1 Gigabyte manual that unless the disks are set to RAID on some boards it is not possible to have 2 non Raid independent disks.

Does anyone know about this and how one can get around the problem ?
Thanks for any suggestions.

As there is a lot of model of Gigabyte motherboard, having told us the model will help peoples here to better help you...

The question was in general really, regarding the use of Multiple SATA disks,
be they in RAUD or not and PATA disks or CDs.

However in this particular case there is a Gigabyte GA-81915P-MF Board.

The On Chip SATA mode is Auto.
There are several other options concerning Channels 0,1,2,3
Her I ma not sure as to any technical advantages of these settings.
The 'Combined' setting may be more appropriate.
Tried another disk and this did not create the same problem.
In fact the formatting ran smoothly.

This tends to indicate a Factory faluty HDD.

Thanks for comments
