Gigabyte KNXP boot problem

When I warm reboot the board doesn`t see the ITE raid controller! I get a boot disk error! If I power off then restart it works. I went into the bios when this happens and there isn`t a controller listed under boot order, just a blank menu. The bios is F5(newest) with 2x WD 80JB connected to the controller. All the other controllers are disabled.

Ok, so warm reboot --> controller vanishes, but on a cold start, it's present. And the system does boot from it when it's detected, just not when it vanishes on a warm reboot, right?

Hmmm... what power supply are you using with that system, and what's the rest of the parts list? Have you tried the system with the Dual-Power System card removed? The reason I ask is partly because the DPS apparently increases the demand on the +12V line, and as ironic as it may sound, the DPS may be pulling so much 12V power that the other components are starving. Just a hunch. 😉

One person remarked that with his Gigabyte DPS-equipped motherboard, Gigabyte's tech support recommended switching to an Enermax PSU, even though he already had a good Antec TruePower unit, and this solved the problem. This is interesting, because both are good-quality units but the Enermaxes typically have very high +12V amperage ratings, supporting my little theory about DPS.

So start by removing the DPS and perhaps reducing the electrical load on the system (unplug non-essential drives, lights and fans) and see if this changes the situation. Good luck, and welcome to the Forums eemain 😀

No DPS installed, Zalman 7000 prevents that. What I have found is if you disable the SATA in the Southbridge it disables the PATA raid sometimes. I enabled the SATA and the problem seems to have gone away, at least after 20 or so reboots. Also if I disable the Sec IDE slave the board doesn`t see my WD 160JB on the Master but Windows does! Probably just some bios glitchs to be worked out later.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too... you might send them an email describing the problem so they become aware of it and get it fixed with the next BIOSes.

I had a very similar problem. I boot from 2x WD Raptors on the Intel RAID controller, RAID 0. I have two Barracuda IV's on the ITE controller, also RAID 0. And a WD 180GB drive on IDE2. I had to put optical drives on IDE1.

On Bios F4, I was experiencing: Cold boot = All ok if I enter Bios and change RAID order to put Intel first. But if I warm boot, the Bios forgets this, and puts Intel back to second and leaves first and third blank. It would boot Ok but I could not see the drives on ITE controller later in XP.
Gigabyte Taiwan could not replicate this, and suggested Bios F5. So I cold booted, put Intel back to boot order number one, and updated. Since then I can see the ITE controller after warm boots. However, even with the Silicone image controller enabled in BIOS (I have nothing connected to it yet) it does not pop up in the POST boot sequence with a hit CTRL + something to setup like the other controllers. (?)

If I put a hard disk on IDE1 it will not boot, hence I put my spare on IDE2.

I feel this is not over yet. Sometimes I can see all the drives in XP, but sometimes (10%) of the time either the ITE is not present or the IDE2 HD is not there.

I run the safe settings in the BIOS, XP would not load on optimised settings. Running certain softwre the machine will reset itself (no blue screen, straight as if I hit Power off - power on.) I have a 525W power supply which can supply 18amps on the 12v rail. (Japanese brand I forgot, was expensive (I thought) at about $120). Software I would consider as resource consuming (ATI graphic demos etc) runs fine, the software that falls over is sometimes the simplest.

I have the same problem. I'm running 2 WD Raptors on the Intel Sata controller, nothing on the SIL or the GigaRaid. If I go into the BIOS and dissable the GigaRaid then go into boot order for the SCSI controllers I find that two items are listed. The SIL is there and the Intel is there although the Intel line is blank, no text. If you try and change the boot order and restart nothing changes. Definately seems like a bios problem but you would think more people have noticed this, it causes serious problems, the number one problem being that sometimes the Intel sata controller is not reconized on startup and you get the no system disk found error. If all the controllers are enabled from the bios I have no problems.

Also, don't anyone suggest that I have a power or memory problem. I'm running a 430W Antec true power supply and Corsair TwinX. Contrary to what everyone else has found I have no problems with this memory, stable as all hell, and fast. This board is great, I can take the fsb to 250 with a 2.4P4C all day long. All I need now is a new bios version that addresses the quirks.

Better to have this board that a MSI 875Neo, everyone that flashes their MSI board to the newest bios gets a dead board in return, have a friend this happened to.
