Gigabyte HD5770 1GB card + Win7 = Suxx?

Hi peeps.

Just bought a new HDD and thought to myself "why not install the new Windows and maybe treat myself with a HD5770?"

Said and done, all fine but as soon as my steam-loaded "The Witcher" started up Windows displayed garbled graphics and had to be reset.

Now, its been a nightmare since windows won't even start sometimes, I have changed the card once but the problem is the same. I have 850W powersupply (cant remember brand but reliable) and I do believe it is down to drivers now.

I had the most up to date from ATI's homepage but I have read at a few places that the old 9.10 should do the trick.

When I install them the system won't pick it up so I now run it on VGA 1400x something.

What to do guys and gal's? Which drivers should I go for or is it something else...

Grateful for all help

List your board and the other variables. Do you have nother card to switch out and isolate? Does anything come up in device manager with question marks?

Give us more info to help you. Start by the exact model names of all your toys.

Man, I was about to compile a reply with all the goods when the whole thing dived. Now I cant even get it to start in failsafe. It wont even boot sometimes and after a crash I will have to turn the PSU off for a while. Tried to use the Win7 recovery tools on the installation disc but then I got memory failures. Now, I dont think I have faulty memory since XP ran just fine with no absurd crashes like this.

Disturbing, as I have to write this post from my Ps3 of all things.

I think I will try to do a clean install if I can get it to start up the installationdisc and try the suggested 9.11b4 drivers.

If anyone have any suggestions feel free to drop them. Father of 3 so I have VERY limited time on my hands.

sounds like a hardware problem. Try another videocard like manimal suggested

I did change the card. First I went back with the 5770 and swapped it for a new one but it changed nothing. Then I threw in my old 8800FT (great card that one) and that got me through to windows but then freezings and re-boots started to occur again.

[edit]fffhhhhhhhhhhh. alcohol does not a short fuse temper...

download, burn ubuntu (or memtest 86). test.

disconnect all devices except for gpu. add back in whatever order logic dictates best.

i'm a bit dismayed you leap to blaming win7 and/or ati, as i've had no issues crossing cpu/nb maker barriers nor gpu with said os.

When I did a search there seem to be quite a few ppl struggling with the drivers for ATI's 5770 series, especially those with Win7 and their issues mirror mine - I have now installed the OS successfully, running of a generic driver with my 5770 and no issues. Downloading the betadriver now and will test it.

Sweetness!

1 hour of Crysis concludes:
- system is stable enough

Many thanks, especially the hint for the 9.11b4 driver!

Haven't benched yet, bought Crysis (I know...) when I got the other gear on friday.

Strange thing... Windows shows me only having 2GB of memory even though I clearly have 2x2GB.
Man, I used to be in touch with things but ever since kid no. 2 and 3 I have really slipped ;)
Is it the same kinda issue that XP had in 32bit where it could not recognize more than 3 GB?
Why doesnt it show 3 then?

There used to be a benchmark program that sussed stuff out, sysmark or something. Is it still around or is there another standard-benchmark nowaday.

What are you getting for benchmark numbers with the 5770 on Crysis?
