Gigabyte Gtx 670 or 7970?

Hello, im new on this site but i was wondering since im upgrading from my old dusty computer.

Here in denmark gig versions of 670 and 7970 are nearly the same price, 20 dollar difference. i will most likely only be running a single monitor, as of right now i dont even have a full HD display.

I will try and play around with overclocking but not too much, just enough to learn how its done, for maybe future use when the card is lacking in performance in a few years.

Rest of the parts i'll buy:

Core I5-3570 6MB
Asrock H77 Pro4
Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750 V2
G.Skill Sniper Series 2 X 4 Gb 1600 mhz
Nzxt Crafted Series Lexa S
Seagate Barracude 2TB
( Possible ill buy a Samsung 840 120 Gb SS-D )

So 670 or 7970 for my needs? the 670 is the one thats 20 dollars more but it doesnt make a difference

I personally prefer the 670 after having both. But it's really a win/win, both are great cards. Granted, that's with the versions of the 670 that use the 680PCB and have the better clocks (such as 670FTW etc). 7970 is a great card without a doubt, I just didn't like that I had issues with some games and some drivers, something I've never run into with the 670.

I would buy a 7970 over a 680 oc even if it costed a bit more, like $50+ more or so. A 7970 oced beats everything.

Yeah, I play all games at 2560x1600 with a single 7970, It's a pretty beastly card, you won't be disappointed if you go that route.

7950 + OC. If you do not have a full HD display, it is more than satisfactory. MSI TF3, Sapphire FLeX or Vapox-X or Dual-x, or HIS IceQ2 are all excellent. Unless you must have PhysX or CUDA, the 1Ghz Windforce 7970 is also superior to the 670.

The brand or cooler doesn't matter much if all you want are guaranteed oc or regular performance. Temps should never be a deciding factor as long as they don't damage and they won't in this case. The only factor can be the noise which should hopefully not be too bad at stock as even a stock 7970 beats a 670.

7970 is consistently quicker and has more memory. It's the clear winner but as Russian Sensation says the best value by far is the 7950 then overclock it. Overclocking is really simple and overclocked it will match/beat the 680.

You know, if he doesn't have a full HD display, even a 7950 would be overkill. I would look at something like a 7870 or a 660.

Either way, a 7950 is a better value than either if you can get much cheaper (more for a 670 than a 7970? Preposterous!). Unless you are playing a certain few demanding games, I'd doubt you'd notice the money spent over a 7870/660.

with AMD boost, the gigabyte 7950 can reach quite good performance. I saw one guy's card to reach 1Ghz...

OP, it's really a no-brainer. 7970 is the better hardware at the better value. Get a voltage unlocked one and overclock it to GHz speeds, or get a GHz one out of the box for a bit more than the 670. In the past the driver issues were a reason to be uncertain, but now unless you mean to CrossFireX in the future, they aren't a problem anymore.

The only reason to consider a 670 is if you need CUDA or want to SLI. If you really needed CUDA you wouldn't be asking us this question since you wouldn't have a choice. So you should ask yourself how sure you are about SLI in the near future.

Same can be said for my reference VisionTek. Thankfully I don't need to go past it to get GHz edition speeds.

Voltage unlocked can be tough to find. Mine is locked even though you can change the levels in trix or after burner.

And yes it is better value for your money. Even a 7950 would do you fine.

If you plan on paying crysis 3 vram is important. Maxing it on my pc it ran out of vram in 20 minutes. I can still play it at the default very high settings though. If I use fxaa I can get better fps.
