Too true. Hehe, Need a really good flow chart to keep up with video card marketing antics.
It is mature tech but still has a good price/performance ratio. I also wanted 1gb mem.

It uses less power (1 6pin connector) and runs relatively cool compared to its competitors (4850 etc.)
If I had a better system I may have opted for HD 4870 or Gtx 260

Everyone here knows what a GTS 250 is.
Not necessarily. 😉

8800 --> 9800 --> 250 = deceptive labeling = turd polishing to the nth degree.

Couldn't resist.

That'd only be true if the G92 was a turd, which it isn't.

I didn't until I checked AT. Unlike some people here who read every single video card development and have the latest and greatest in SLI/quad crossfire/etc, I'm still using a single HD3850. Bite me.

GTS 250 is one of the best CUDA/GPGPU cards out there. Great PPW and much cheaper than the GT200 based cards.

Not everyone, I actually thought 250 was a slightly underclocked 260.

wow, that line of thinking never even occurred to me. now I see why people are calling this a borderline scam. it all makes sense.

the deal itself looks decent though.

Fair enough. Still, it's not a bad performer, nor is it bad for the price. You call the labeling "deceptive," yet the video card you have (3850) is basically a rebadged, lower-power version of the 2900XT. Doesn't make it a bad video card.

Is this true?

There is a good sampling of article/reviews from different sites out there for this particular card.

Most of the reviews I have seen say just the opposite about fan noise. Statements like "very quiet", "almost silent". Hopefully just one or two ban fans out there.

I should have this by Monday and will post my subjective take on this card.

Also, there is suppose to be a lot of head room on this card for OC. I know it will be a big boost as I am still using my evga 7600gt ko which, I love, but has been struggling of late.

Thanks for the post. Good timing, my card just quit on me. Do you know how long the discount code is for? Also, my current card is a 8800GTS 512, will I see much (any) of a performance gain with this card? Thanks

Aside from the GPU being 55NM instead of 65NM and the card having 1GB instead of 512MB they're identical. You might be able to hit higher clockspeeds and the extra RAM could come in handy with certain games played at certain resolutions, but this would otherwise be a sidegrade for you.

I have to agree. this is the refined version of your very card.
Anandtech article
better cooling and power usage.

Coupon code good till 5/6/09

Card arrived 2 hrs ago. nice solid look & feel to it. Subjectively I would not consider this a loud card. I am hard pressed to tell if it is any louder than the 7600 GT it replaced. I swapped them out several times getting my ear down in the case. Nor can I tell if it competes with my x2 3800+ stock cooler. If it does increase the noise level it is slight and blends into the normal fan noise so as to be indistinguishable.
Card is also smaller than I imagined. measuring 8.25" in length and about 4.25" down to the interface.
Hope this helps.

Man, I wish they'd drop prices on this card. It'd be perfect at around $100. But with prices on the GTX 260 dropping so fast, it's hard to justify a measly $10-$20 price savings.

$130 is a good deal for a 1 GB GTS 250, but only compared to other GTS 250s available. If you look at the overall picture, the GTX 260 at $160 ($140 AR) is probably the best gaming graphics deal available now.

yeah i just had a card die on me that i wasn't sure if i was gonna be able to RMA... and i went back and forth between the 250 and gtx 260.

i have a smaller case so i ultimately decided on the 250 because i couldn't afford a new case AND a new card. but if it weren't for that... yeah... the price difference between the 2 cards right now is essentially nothing.
