Gigabyte Geforce 6800 cooling

I have a gigabyte 6800 in an antec sonata case. This is the gigabyte with the passive heat sink on it. It gets mighty toasty in my case unless I put all the fans to high. (And then the fan on my CPU and the one in the power supply crank up plenty high.)

I'm not that worried about the 6800 since it is supposed to run that hot but the case develops a very hot spot right around the memory.

This is all fine if I turn the two 120mm fans in the case to high. But that is a bit on the loud side.

Is there a good way with out generating a lot of noise to improve air flow in that case?

My previous card (9800) was also quite toasty (but not like this) however it came with an artic cooling silencer that ducted the heat out of the back of the case. Is my best bet to just pick up one of those and replace the stock HS?

If your airflow is bad you might as well get an NV5. The Zalman 700 is a nice cooler but you need good airflow to get the hot air out of the case.

an artic cooler does nto really pull enough hot air out to cool the case. besides, the opening it facing down towards the pci slots which is the coolest place in teh case. a zalman will cool the card better.

I was thinking it would pull the heat from the GPU out of the case rather than letting it run amok inside the machine.

Hmmmm....

There are many ways to improve air flow in the case as well as removing the heated air from the case....

You will have to look around but there are fans that attach to an open PCI slot that would blow air upward ands thus create better airflow!

There are different fans that you can put on your video card aftermarket.....even though it voids your warranty when you do that to a card!

There are also double fans that hook to the screw that hold your PCI cards in place that blow towards your motherboard as well as towards your video card!

There are also fans that attach to your PCI slots that face upwards towards your Video Card that can provide adittional airflow.....

You could also go the case mod route and mask yourself a bracket install a fan on the bracket where the dead hot air is not flowing and move that hot air!

There are all kinds of options if you have the time and the patients to do it right!

I had the same problem.....but with a little thought and alot of looking around at different sites I found what I needed to correct the airflow problem!🙂

I don't understand why you're recommending him a Zalman that would keep his case temps the same but might cool the GPU a bit better. The Arctic Silencer ejects GPU heat straight out of the case, thus keeping overall case temp down as opposed to your solution which is to let the air mingle around in the case. The silencer's function is not as an exhaust fan for the whole case, just the GPU. If you don't want to go through the trouble of replacing the huge heatsink, you could also keep the standard cooling and look into a pci blower that would suck the air right under the card out keeping the lower portion of your case cooler.

Just goes to show that # of posts has nothing to do with giving decent advice.

The Gigabyte passive coolers don't perform very well even in well ventilated cases. I would pick up a Zalman VF-700, it performs better and like previously mentioned the AC coolers don't move enough air to make a significant difference in case temp.

I also have the gigabyte video card and my idle temp was 58c / 136.4 F!!!

Even though video cards understandably are notorious for running hot🙁.....I was not comfortable with the temps i was getting!!:disgust:

Considering the price of the card......lolol😛

So-I fabricated a fan holder that allowed me to mount a variable speed fan facing the video card!!
It dropped my video card temps considerable idle 52c/125.6 F!!!!!!😀

Woot!!!!! For about 30 minutes of work I lowered the temp for the price of a 3speed fan which I can control via the back of the case!!

Thus when I am gaming I can crank that puppy up and well you know the rest of the story..😉

The Gigabyte heatsink should be fine as long as you put the front fan in your Sonata. If yo ureally want to replace the heatsink, get the Zalman. I've had the NV5 and Zalman and the Zalman cooled better. If you're stuck on the NV5, I have a spare you can have for $20.

I have the second fan installed. I prefer to run it on low (which I really can't hear) so the raid array doesn't melt. (Those hitachi drives get warm.)

My main concern is the heat build up around my memory. The video card itself is fine but it is pumping heat into the case. If I have the fans on low (or controlled by the sonatas' power supply) things get very warm in the case. If I turn them on high the temperatures are fine but I can't stand the noise.

A pci blower to suck the air out of that area of the case would be just fine for you.
