Gigabyte GA8IHXP - what is the max CPU I can use?

I have a Gigabyte GA8IHXP rev 3 P4 I850E 533 FSB motherboard with Rambus memeory (it's about 2 years old).

I'm running a 2.4ghz PC now but want to upgrade to the best CPU that I can install.

I went to the Gigabyte website and the best I can tell is that I can go to a 3.06mhz P4 northwood with a 533 FSB to match my mobo.

Can someone who has this board or knows a lot about them asnwer the following questions for me.

1) Is a 3.06ghz w/533FSB the highest CPU I put in this mobo?

2) I was told that my mobo will NOT support Hyper threading. Is this true?

3) I thought HT was only in P4's with 800 FSB. What is confusing me is that I saw several internet places selling a 3.06/533FSB P4 CPU and they said it had HT. Is this a mistake in their ad?

4) Where's the best place to buy this CPU? Newegg doesn't have it in stock. I would be looking for OEM because I have a fan and HS.

Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Hi,

Here's my 2c

1 - If Gigabyte say 3.06 is max - 3.06 is max. Manufacturers aren't usually wrong on this issue - especially since 3.06GHz is the max intel cpu with 533MHz FSB, which is the max FSB your mobo supports.

2 - See one. Can't be 100%, but they wouldn't usually say it doesn't work without good reason (as it may hurt sales).

3. - 3.06GHz is the max 533MHz FSB Intel P4 processor. It DOES support HT.

4. - Sorry - can't help as I live in the UK.

Good luck,

Andy

1- Yes, it was designed to receive the 3.06. You can put a 800fsb on it, but many board didn't have as much high fsb options. I remember my P4PE went to 240fsb and it was a 133 mobo.

2- Don't think so. With a BIOS update i think the i850 can use HT cpu's

3- No. It's the only 533 cpu that has HT.

Well I'm continuing to find out more info.

I have now confirmed that my board WILL accept a 3.06ghz 533FSB CPU. Now the big issue is will my motherboard support Hyper threading because it appears that the 3.06ghz/533 FSB ONLY comes WITH hyper threading.

The place I bought my computer from tells me the board won't accept hyper threading. But I'm not convinced that they know what they are talking about.

The Gigabyte website is not much help on the HT question.

I would like to use Hyper Threading if I can cause it looks like I can't buy a 3.06 P4 CPU without it.

If my mobo won't support HT can I use the CPU with HT anyway and hopefully it will just ignore HT?

Any help or ideas to help me solve this would be much apprreciated.

Thx
