Just finished putting together my new build, and I'm experiencing something Ive never seen before. When I hit the power button, mb LED flashes quickly, all fans turn on briefly, and then everything turns off. Nothing else happens. Even if I hit the power button again, nothing happens. I have to toggle the PSU's power switch to recreate the scenario.

Thought I had the power switch leads connected backwards...took it out and flipped it. Same thing.
Took out RAM - same thing
Unplugged everything else - same thing

PSU is from my old build and it was just working ok. So I dont thing that's causing it, but I'll try another PSU tomorrow just in case.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I'm baffled as to whats causing this.

edit: PSU causing the error. Opened a thread about it in Power Supplies

What I'd try is this:

First, remove the mb from the case and reassemble your components on a piece of cardboard or other non-conductive surface. Try to boot it that way. (You can get the mb/psu to start by jumping the power button connector on the mb with a small flat blade screwdriver.....only has to have momentary connection to start. The on/off switch on your case is simply a momentary on/off connector/switch.) Also, when you remove the mb from the case, ensure there were no extra standoffs that could be shorting out the board when you energized it.

If still doesn't boot, remove everything, including video card, and retry. Also, during this ensure you've got a speaker attached to the speaker output on the mb, the beeps could give you a clue. Keep adding parts until it won't boot.....you've found your culprit. Make sure that when you add the memory, you add it/them to the preferred slots for that motherboard.

I'd also look at how tightly you've bolted down the Thermalright cooler. I've seen boards be very sensitive to having bolt on coolers bolted too tightly, causing just enough bend in the board to prevent booting.

Really doubt it's the ps as that ps you have is a little tank. But, if you have another known good one to test with, wouldn't hurt to try.

I dont know anything about Gigabyte Z68 boards, but this will happen with ASUS mobo when using XMP profile memory and its not set to that in bios.

And you could also check for bent or missing pins in the ziff socket

Have you tried a full cmos reset with PSU unplugged?
