Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P + SPDIF_OUT header--no audio?

Has anybody successfully used their Gigabyte P55's SPDIF_OUT header on the motherboard to connect to something (probably HDMI on a video card)?

I've tried connecting it to my Asus GeForce 9600, but aren't having any joy. I'm running the Windows 7 RC, but am only seeing one SPDIF out. I'm not getting any sound from it, and the drivers indicate that it's going to the jack on the back as opposed to an internal device.

This occurs with both the built-in drivers that ship with Windows, and with those supplied by Gigabyte. I've checked and the wires are connected correctly (assuming that the cable--that came with the card--obeys "black is ground", and the motherboard manual isn't wrong).

I find it interesting that the header doesn't appear in Windows--either before or after I connected the cable. And no, there's no driver-less items in the Device Manager.

Any further troubleshooting suggestions? Or positive experience that mean I'm almost certainly doing it wrong? :)
