I am having some strange problems with my new system built on this board. Guess I should start off with a listing of the hardware.
Motherboard Gigabyte P35C-DS3R rev 2.1 F10 BIOS
Q6600 Quad Core G0 Step
2 Gigabytes DD2 6400 Geil RAM
Video: Gigabyte GeForce 8800 GTS 512
Sound: Creative X-Fi Gamer
4 Western Digital 250 Gig SATA drives in a RAID 10 configuration
2 Samsung DVD Burners (one PATA, one SATA)
Leadtek 2200 1xPCI-X TV Tuner
Windows XP Professional OEM w/ SP2 and all current updates
The system runs great, just a few quirks to get worked out. When I click on the PVR program from Leadtek to watch TV or record TV it brings the system to it's knees for about 10 seconds (the tv display comes up instantly but it is jittery/jerky as is the entire system). I had the same problem with the latest WINAMP audio player, but I switched down to version 2.35 and the problem stopped with WINAMP. I get a similar problem with AnyDVD from slysoft, except it is not as severe, but it continues as long as the program is running. (The AnyDVD problem can be fixed by turning off the program for the SATA DVD Burner). It all seems to be drive access related. With AnyDVD there is a flash of the drive activity light every 5 seconds or so and when the drive access light is on the mouse freezes on the screen. With the Leadtek software it is the same, while the drive access light is on everything is slowed, as soon as it is done, the system is fine. It does not seem to do it while loading any other programs or accessing the hard drive. It seems almost like an IRQ conflict or DMA problems of the past but it only seems to effect these 2 programs. Another problem that has come to my attention(actually my wife's) is AOL's instant messenger. It starts up fine, but while messaging half the time the Enter key does not send a message (it just puts a carriage return in the message) sometimes the sounds don't work, sometimes the screen does not flash when a message comes in, the emoticons don't work (even though all these options are turned on in the prefs I have tried the latest version and an older version 5.9). I also noticed once that AIM was using almost 400K of memory, and I have noticed that while it is running I can sit and watch task manager and the memory useage go up by 8K every 5 - 15 seconds. All the software/Windows is the latest versions (and legit) and all drivers are the newest on manufacturer's websites. I am wondering if it is related to the RAID drivers. I have not tried setting up the system with no RAID (gets to be a pain to keep calling Microsoft every time I reinstall XP (curses for being cheap and buying the OEM version!). This seems like a great system but with these quirks I am ready to go back to my old system! Any clues / help / ideas welcome.
Thanks,
Rich
