hi all,
i just got a gigabyte K8N Ultra-9 and i can't get it to power up at all. i've disconnected everything from the board except cpu, ram, power connectors and switch, and the PSU does not turn on at all when i hit the power switch. it's an Emermax EG-365P-V, a 350W unit from a few years ago. it has a 20 pin ATX connector, and the gigabyte board has a little plastic cover for the extra 4 pins of the 24 pin connector, so i think it is plugged in correctly and should be compatible. are there some other weird PSU compatibility issues i could be running into? i have a new Seasonic S12-430 coming in soon so i will be able to test with that, but i know this Enermax still works fine with my old Shuttle nforce2 board. any suggestions?

thanx,
TD

If you are sure you have the power supply connected correctly, it sounds like there may be a short circuit on your motherboard. If possible, try the PS with one other board as a final test. If it works, contact the vendor for the motherboard, and exchange it.

You may find 350 W is a bit low for newer setups.

Hope that helps. :)

thanks for the reply Harvey. i did re-test the PS with my old Shuttle board, and it still works fine there... i unmounted the Gigabyte in case there was a short somewhere with the case, also tried removing my Thermalright XP-90 and the special metal backplate it requires with my board, just in case that was shorting too (it has a layer of insulation on it, but never know). still no dice... i guess i'll wait until my new Seasonic PS comes in (i agree my 350-watter is not optimal) and see if that works, if not i'll have to swap the board. annoying.

sure, it's the Gigabyte board, Athlon 64 3200+, (2) OCZ ValueRam 512MB PC3200 DIMMs, Emermax EG-365P-V power supply to be replaced by a Seasonic S12-430 soon. all other peripherals i've completely disconnected for testing purposes. tried clearing CMOS, still no go.

found the issue - it was my PSU after all. i don't know what ATX version my old Enermax was, but apparently it wasn't supplying power correctly to the board. i have heard people say 20-pin ATX supplies don't always work with the new 24-pin boards, and some people think this is due to the boards requiring all 24 pins, but i think the real issue is some incompatibility with insufficient power or the like, not with the missing 4 pins.

anyway i got my Seasonic S12-430 PSU now (24 pin), and it works great. (re-)installing windows now. thanks for the help guys.

p.s. the board seems pretty nice so far, but the passive northbridge cooler does bother me... it gets BURNING hot when the computer is just idling.i jury rigged a case fan to blow towards it from a few inches away and it helps enormously... still gets hot, but not as bad as before. adequate airflow is a must if you keep the stock cooler, and i do not think it is easily upgraded because it needs to be low profile or it'll block the PCIe 16x card... poor placement, but not much room to work with on the board i suppose.
