In the midst of all my TV tuner troubles, I decided to run Memtest86+. Last night it ran for 17 passes with no errors. This morning I reboot to find I'm not getting an IP address. I also notice that my router isn't detecting my PC. There is also no network adapter listed in Device Manager.
I also checked the Smart LAN feature in the BIOS - it can't seem to detect a cable attached to the network plug. I did swap out the cable for the hell of it, to no effect.

Did my motherboard just decide to start to die on me now?

I'm posting from my laptop, for those wondering. The PC is effectively network-less.

this happened to me last year. It was right after a lightening storm. Somehow, the current went through the Cat5 cable and fried my router and everything connected to the router.

It fried the network card in 2 PCs, and the one in my XBOX 360 and the router. Nothing I could do except buy a couple of cheap network cards to replace them.

Did you just have a storm last night?

It's the middle of winter here. Cold as hell. My UPS's log shows no power outages or overages.

I guess I'll be trying for a double RMA. See if I can return this motherboard for its dead NIC, and my TV tuner might be bad (fresh out of the box) too.

Edit: Well, it looks like Newegg has a 1 year replacement policy, and I'd really rather not be without my computer for the time it'll take to get a replacement. I'll just stick a PCI NIC in there in the meantime, and return the motherboard after the semester is over.
But I'm still sending the TV Tuner back.

If the surge was on the data line I do not believe that the UPS log would show it. Is your incoming data line surge protected? and if so with what?

It's "protected" by my router. I didn't know they made CAT5 surge protectors. I'd only ever seen surge protectors with jacks for phone, electric (duh), and cable TV.

The router seems just fine. I've even got my laptop plugged into the port that the PC was using.

This is now the "WTF Update Post."

I had the PC turned off last night, including switched off at the power supply.
This morning, the network jack is working. I'm posting from my PC.

My computer hath healed itself? What gives here?
