Hi

I just got the components for my new rig and I assembled it today, hoping to get it up and running. It posts fine and everything seems to function normally except the secondary IDE channel. It will detect my IBM 180GXP 120GB hard drive most of the time, but it fails to detect the following drives nearly all the time: Lite-On LTR-48246S 48x CD-RW, Lite-On LTD-166 16x DVD, Creative Labs 12x DVD, Creative Labs 12x CD-RW, Creative Labs 52x CD-ROM, and a ratty Yamaha 16x CD-RW. The primary channel has no trouble detecting any of them. I've tried several IDE cables as well. I have flashed the BIOS to the F4 version, and I have not installed an OS. Though I've built several computers in the past, I've never had to RMA anything (lucky, I guess) so do you think it's RMA time for me??? I got it from Newegg.com, I hope their RMA is painless. If it helps, here are the rest of this system's specs:

Gigabyte GA-8SG667 SiS648 mobo
Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz 533MHz FSB
Arkua 8568 HSF
IBM 180GXP 120GB HD
512 MB Gigabyte approved Samsung DDR400 (is running at DDR400)
Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2
Lian-Li Aluminum case
Antec True430 430W PS
Lite-On 48x CD-RW
Lite-On 16x DVD
SMC Ethernet NIC
NEC FP2141SB-BK 22" monitor
Intellimouse explorer, Belkin black ergo keyboard, Logitech Z560s, Grado SR60s, Alps FDD

Thanks guys for any help you can offer.

Double check your cd-rom's jumper settings. I use master or slave for everything. Cable select or any other setting may give you problems with multiple drive setups, and cause delays in your boot up. If you're absolutely sure your cables and settings are correct, then you may have a bad ide port. Newegg's rma time is the best. I get my new boards in about 8 days with standard fedex shipping. I would select a different brand if you decide to rma. You may have a similar problem in another 8sg667. Could also be a problem with one of your devices.

Thanks for the reply O1die. Yep, my master/slave settings are correct. I can unplug the IDE cable from the IDE2 connector and plug it into the IDE1 connector and my Lite-On drives will be detected and function normally. When I plug the IDE cable back into IDE2, I get nothing. IDE2 IS enabled in the BIOS (part of the fail-safe mode) so it's not that. I will test the Lite-On drives in another machine today to make sure they work properly elsewhere.
