i DID have the prob, flashed to f6, now no prob 🙂 reboots every time EXCEPT when i have voltage about 1.7, but i run 2.48 ghz @ 1.65 so i am safe, but to boot stable and do prime95 i have toi do 1.75 for 2.62 ghz, then i have reboot issues, so it looks like if voltage is <1.7 its cool 🙂

I had the problem with F5 through F6C. The F6D (now F6 final) fixed the issue. I am running at 1.65v so I do not know if it will have an issue at 1.7v. I will try this evening.

<< The problem occuring at the high end may be because of the tolerances in the PSU. =/- 5% is allowed with the P4 which at 1.75v is .0875v. This means the CPU could be running at 1.8375v, which is the maximum they are officially rated for. Obviously at 1.8 this could take it over the maximum spec, and at 1.85 definitely does, unless it runs below the set voltage which would explain why some systems with this setting do work. >>

This is a quote from Gigabyte tech support on the matter.
May be of some interest to you guys.

My boards going back tomorrow when my A7V266E arrives. Im not going to waste any more time with this board as i feel Gigabyte are rushing their products out too early before QA have done their job properly IMO FWIW.

Maybe Gigabyte are skimping on the VRM's with this board?

sorry to hear that rockhard..the board is actually a good performer and i would recommend it to anyone who didnt really care about the reboot issue...i just dont turn off my computer anymore since my cpu idles at 36c even after a 1200MHz overclock (yes, thats 1.2Ghz 🙂).

Hnick - what temp does your CPU show as when you say run Prime95 for a few hours under load?
Just curious as im thinking that i may be able to get my next AMD rig to run as cool as the P4A 🙂

Thanx for the info 🙂
Its just that with the HOda WPCRSet proggy that allows you to enable the HALT command for the Via chipset you can get your idle to be as low, if not lower that i currently have with my P4. That and the load temps being no different makes me wonder about the merit of having my current P4 rig :/
Guess i will find out tomorrow when i get it setup and give it a try 🙂

My board was fine at 1.7v but had the reboot issue at 1.75 this afternoon. Running a 1.8a at 2.52 with 1.65v, got it to 2.61 with 1.75 but have no real need to run it that hot.

Trying to decide which memory to use with this board.

Presently I have at my disposal either

2 x 256MB Crucial CL2.5 DDR

or

1 x 512MB Crucial CL2.5 ECC

Which one should I use??? Does the board support ECC? If so what advantages/disadvantages would I have?

Thanks,
Ron

The board supports ECC though you can disable it in the bios and just use like a normal dimm.
You could pop that 512mb dimm in with one of those 256mb dimms just fine as long as you disable ECC first.

Anyone have experience with this board and a Santa Cruz soundcard?

If so which PCI slot did you use.

Thanks,
Ron

PCI slot 3 is good for any soundcard AFAIK.
As for PCI slot sharing it should show you in the bios IIRC.
I know my Asus A7V266 does but cannot remember if the GA8IRXP does, sorry.

Does anyone know which PCI slots are sharing with what onboard resources?

Has anyone had any trouble with the onboard RAID?? Is it better just to use the controller as an IDE controller instead of RAiD?

Thanks,
Ron

Puma1824,

The PCI sharing is dependent upon what on-board items you are using. If you turn off the on-board sound then PCI slot 3 is free, etc, etc,. I have not had any issues using the Raid controller in Raid 0 configuration.

Thanks 🙂

Would you know any other sharing going on??

What are the other slots sharing with or not?

I will PM you with the various combinations tomorrow.

Intertech,

You can lock the PCI/AGP, also there are few different settings to lock the PCI/AGP at depending at what fsb you are running.

That would be great 🙂

That's great to hear. I purchased another P4 1.8a and able to overclock to 2.52ghz (140x18), but at very high voltage (1.8v, BIOS actual is 1.7v). I think the 1.8a can go higher, but it is being held back by the SOYO due to the PCI/AGP being to high. It can post 2.7ghz (150x18) but I get the BSOD at the start of XP. At 2.6ghz (145x18), XP load fine, but Quake3 freezes about 2-3min of play. I just ordered the 8IRXP to see if I can go higher with the PCI/AGP locked at spec. Keeping my fingers crossed....

I have found the SIS645 boards (gigabyte/asus) will really let you overclock the 1.8a compared to the Intel. I love both. 🙂

It sounds like this board is just in need of a few more minutes in the oven... hopefully the issue can be fixed with BIOS update rather than an actual hardware re-fit (new rev).

I really want to order this board... I remember fondly the good old 300a Celeron days... I built 3 rigs that all ran rock solid at 450mhz.

This board is really the only one that has everything I want... I like having the extra IDE channels of the Promise controller (have one on my current mobo, frees up my regular IDE channels so that I have one CD drive on each as master).... (I want USB 2.0 without sacrificing a slot, and the Intel on-board LAN sounds great).

Hopefully they fix this soon, I'm on the fence right now!! don't want to settle for an Asus PB266 at the same price!

Heehaw...Just got my 8IRXP and my 1.6a is rock solid at 2.51ghz (157x15) at 1.8v (actual 1.76v). Ran Super Pi 33 millions digits at 1hours 11minutes 47seconds. The temp was 42c while Super Pi was running and 33-34c while it is idle. I am using the Sunflower heatsink.
This same CPU was stable at 2.32ghz on my Soyo Dragon Ultra. I have no problem with the reboot issues after I flashed to F6. I also did the vid-mod to 1.7v as well. I will put my 1.8a in tonight to see how high I can take it. I am aiming for 2.7-2.8ghz range.
