Link identifying problem. Notice under F8 bios that is says you can't
boot from 40pin 100/133 HD.

So I have this board all hooked up and installed. I try to boot
the system up but with a 40pin cable ata 100/133 HD hooked
up it won't even begin to boot or show any video. I upgraded
to the latest bios ( F8 ) that I know of via CDROM. Right now
I don't have older HD's laying around but does anyone have
this mobo?

Is there a newer bios out with the ata 100/133 40pin fix?

System can not boot form ATA-100,133 hard disk with 40 pins cable

TIA.

My guess is that they meant it won't boot with a 40-wire cable, not a 40-pin cable (all IDE cables are 40-pin as far as I know). So you're saying that the board won't POST if the IDE drive is plugged into the IDE cable? Have you tried an 80-wire cable too? The drive's power plug is plugged in? ( 😱 )

Hehe.. Well I don't think I have any 80wire cables. This is exactly what Gigbytes
website says (see my link).

Look under the F8 Bios version.

So I guess I need to get an 80 wire cable?

** Also the mobo will not post at all if I have a 40wire cable hooked up to the HD. It will turn on for a few secs but will not start to boot or display any video. Then abruptly turns off. If I hookup a CDRW drive to the same cable it will boot fine however. Just doing this when I hookup the HD.

I bet you're right, just find yourself an 80-wire cable. Good luck, hope it works for you 😀

Well went an got an 80 conductor cable and no go. Still the same problem. If I plug a HD into
it then the box won't even start to post. Only powers on for a few seconds and shuts off.

If I have no devices or a cdrom hooked up then it functions just fine.

Anyone dealt with this motherboard before? Or does anyone know what my problem is?

Maybe the hard drive isn't healthy. Have you confirmed that it works in other systems?

oh yeah its brand new and I tried it in my other box. works great.

So far I tried both a 160gb new maxtor HD, and a 120gb WD drive.

Both are known to be working drives and both gave me the same
problem. So I am pretty lost on why it will not boot with a HD
hooked up but will boot when a cdrw is hooked up..

What jumper settings have you tried? With the WD, you might try jumpering it for "Single Drive" and putting it on the end connector of the IDE cable so there isn't any vacant section of cable beyond it. Or you might consider just bailing that Gigabyte motherboard and grab an Asus A7N266-VM.

I would bail on this mobo but I would like to get it working. Its really a system for mom and pop
and they don't play any hard core games or anything. Perfect little setup for them if I can just
get it to post with HD attached.

anyone else got some ideas? anyone else dealt with this board before?

I emailed gigabyte but who knows how long support will take to
write me back.

good idea but I tried that. still gave me the same problem.

Well I tried 3 different HD's.

Asll HDs were set to master.

The Western digital HD I tried didn't need a jumper since it was the only device connected.

You never answered Mechs question about the jumpers. What do you have them set to on the HD?

Try a jumper for kicks and also try making it a slave and booting off it. If this doesn't work, try a different cable yet again. Other than that, your mobo is fubar pretty much.

errr..

Thanks for all your help. My life story..

time to have a funeral for this gigabyte POS

Can you set the bios to boot to the drive at ATA 66 instead of 100/133 (just to see if it boots?)
I havent set up a system in a while.. but its worth a shot.
Tried other ram? Tried other hard drive in this system?

Well it finally works now.. but...

The HD has to be set to slave and the CDRW has to be master. Everything runs
fine and stable. Why the heck would this mobo do this. I never had this problem
before in my life and I've dealt with numerous mobos.

I've always ran the HD that holds the OS on master. Since its set to slave
will the hurt the performance? The cdrw is supposed to be set to master
anyways so I don't think that would be a problem?
