Howdy gang, time for me to chime in again...

I'm building another PC for a co-worker's "friend," who only wants a basic, yet fast, PC. We are trying to keep costs low but value high.

I stumbled across this board, the Gigabyte GA-7VAX, for a very nice price (well, nice for it's supposed very nice feature set). Basically, does anyone know any information about this board? I can't seem to find a review anywhere... Good or bad? Can anyone recommend a better one for around the same price?

Basically I'm thinking this PC will be around AMD XP 1600-ish, and I was originally planning on just using a single 256mb stick of PC2100 DDR, but may go higher if prices permit.

Any help would be appreciated! I've heard good things about some of the recent Gigabyte boards, along with a lot of bad from some of their past boards. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi,

Here are a couple reviews that go over the GA-7VAX:

THG review of KT400 chipset boards
GamePC review of KT400 chipset

Basically the KT400 does not perform too favourably with DDR400... however, as for DDR233, I wouldn't imagine any stability issues.

Well, there are definitely people here who are far more capable at myself in terms of recommending Socket A motherboards, but I just wanted to point you towards those two reviews. ;)
