I'm helping my friend build a computer. He's got a Gigabyte GA-7N400-L, so we're trying to use the onboard sound since it's pretty good. He's got some 5.1 speakers for it, as well (Logitech 640s).

Sound only ever wanted to come out of the front speakers, though everything was hooked up right (triple-checked it). We had the speakers set up as both 5.1 and quadrophonic. To do some testing, I downloaded the RightMark Audio thingy, where you can click and drag the positioning dot to test sound separation.

There was a menu in the program that let us choose what kind of DirectSound to use. For some reason, with the latest ForceWare release, the ONLY option not greyed out was "DirectSound 2D - Software" or something to that effect. I installed the motherboard software directly from the CD it came with, rebooted, and now 2 more became available: DirectSound 3D - Hardware + EAX2 and DirectSound 3D - Hardware. Both of the latter worked perfectly in the test, the rear speakers functioned.

The problem is, the system seems to default to the DirectSound 2D - Software still. As soon as I close that program, the rear channels never work again. Is there some way to "default" the sound to 3D + EAX2?

Or am I just doing something totally wrong?
