Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P - CPU upgrades?

My best guess would be the FX-8120. It will give you a 2000 point boost over the FX-4100 according to CPUBenchmark.net

Do NOT get 8120 or 8140. Do not get anything x1xx. You want x3xx, which is the Piledriver revision of Bulldozer. It uses the same or less power and is significantly faster. I checked in on your motherboard and it will support all the new Piledriver chips, 8320 + 8350 included (anything x3xx). You must have the latest BIOS on your motherboard for it to work however. So update the BIOS before you install the new CPU. Given that you are using 760g chipset I wouldn't expect much/any overclocking headroom on the chip you get but moving up to a 6300 or greater will be a nice improvement from the Piledriver architecture plus the extra cores.

Yeah, he's already covered all the bases for looking at a suitable processor. The 8300 would have been the choice, but the 81x0 series is the only thing available that comes close.

What are you talking about?

83xx and 63xx processors are widely available, there is literally no reason at all to get the 81xx or 61xx unless they are vastly cheaper and you're on a tight budget.

OP: Your motherboard can't handle the 8320 or 8350 so I would recommend just getting the 6300. You move up to 3 modules, 6 threads ("6 core") which will help since Planetside 2 just got the update that adds better multi-core usage in the game. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113286

I vote for the FX 6300 as well. Would be a good upgrade over what you have for a small price.
