Hello,

As because I'm time limited, I'll simple copy & paste the email that I have just sent to Gigabyte's Global Technical Support. By reading my email you'll know what my problem is. Any advise will be more than welcome.

Hello,

I'm having troubles with this motherboard. I have been using a NVIDIA GeForce 7100 GS 128MB graphic card since I buy the G41M-ES2L and I have been happy with it because I was able to overclock my C2D E4400 up to 3.0GHz with the default core voltage (1.3250V) as many other people have been able to achieve.

A few days ago I purchased a ATI XFX HD 4770 512MB and since then no matters what I put on the CPU Host Freq (even 200 - C2D E4400 stock) my system doesn't boot, not even POST. It gets turned off and then automatically is turned on and it boots fine but ignoring the OC settings. I have been able to verify that when the CPU Host Clock Control is [Disabled] my system boot without any problems.

For me it's pretty clear that your motherboard has an incompatibility issue while attempting to OC a C2D E4400 with a ATI XFX HD 4770.

Hope to get a solution for my issue.

Thank you,
Jonathan

I've had issues with the cheap Gigabyte boards for overclocking, with random issues occurring depending on what hardware you have plugged in. I have a different board, G31M-ES2L, but I've seen similar threads talking about the G41 version that you have.

My board is only happy in certain FSB bands. . . I can run at stock 200MHz FSB, or 266, or 333, but not 233, or 250, or 300, for instance. If I plug in SATA drives that is. . .with just an IDE hard drive you can use what FSB you like. Totally bizarre.

I also had to disable USB Legacy keyboard/mouse/storage support in the BIOS, or the thing would just reboot if you tried to overclock at all. . .again, different board, but I suspect there could be a similar random issue with yours. If nothing else it's an idea to try.

"IF YOU ARE HAVING A PROBLEM OVERCLOCKING THIS BOARD GO INTO THE CMOS AND CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT BOTH OF THE DRIVES ARE NOT SET TO MASTER OR SLAVE DRIVES. iF SO YOU ARE CAUSING A CONFLICT BETWEEN THE 2 DRIVES AND THAT IS WHY YOUR BOARD WILL NOT OVERCLOCK UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO OR TRY"

Hi,

I'm trying to OC a Q8300 on this board without success, not a single mhz, it just won't start when oc. it shuts down twice, then reboots and resets to default speed.
what do you mean about the drives ?

I have 2 sata drives in enhanced mode (ide is disabled), can't remember in which sata ports they are plugged into. Is it important ?
I've also heard about usb issues with this board.
I have version 1.0 with bios F4.

it must be something special to do, as soon as I unlock the FSB auto speed to enter even a little jump (even with vcore increase!) it just won't post.
:(:(

help

thanks !

That strangerguy post makes no sense. The master/slave settings are for IDE drives, and those are jumpers on the drives.

What am I missing ?

yes, the position of sata drives on the sata port should have no influence on boot whatsoever.
i'm trying to understand.

anyway, the fact that this mobo (G41M-ES2L) won't boot at all when oc is applied (little fsb increase) is very strange.
vcore could be a cause of no post but i checked it and the Q8300 should easily near the 3ghz without voltage increase

Must be some kind of hard limitation that disables boot when not at stock speed, i've looked into much of the bios setting but did not find what prevents it from at least starting up

After scouring for some OC info on this board, it appears G31/41 chipset has a hard FSB wall at around ~340 FSB onwards. For a 333 FSB Q8300, you might as well don't even bother OCing.

damn 340 D:D:
:(

so the only tweak i can do is running the board on "extreme" in Performance Enhance (instead of standard or turbo)

nevertheless that sounds strange to me that the board is so FSB limited, i thought i had read that people hit over 3ghz with this cpu and this board (guess it wasn't this board then... :hmm: )

sure it's fsb wall ?
might upgrading to biod F6 help ?
or getting to 7x multiplier (some multiplier halves aren't so well managed)

any other tweaks i can do ?
i'll try to find some links to people overclocking this mobo with a cpu like mine

i've built up a hackintosh that's why this cheap board (50$) was fine for me.

This is a great little budget overclocking MB....For dual core chips only or any chip that doesn't already run on the 1333fsb for that matter.

No bios update will help you. It's a budget board that has overclocking friendly bios settings.

ok... 340 or so fsb wall seems pretty bad in y opinion
i guess this mobo is best with an old Q6600

ok , i give it up , let's say i'm too old to play with overclocking :D

i will take this opportunity to run a silent system (cpu and system fan at the minimum) and graphic card has a passive one

and anyway 64bits snow leopard is more demanding on the memory side than true cpu speed. i'll be upgrading to 2x 4go for this matter to run simultaneously aperture, photoshop and mpayb capture nx

thanks for the input guys :)
