I had some issues with my EVGA SSC 970s and Newegg was cool enough to let me exchange them for a different make/model. I followed some recommendations and went with the Gigabyte G1 Gaming cards. I just got done doing some quick and dirty testing with my two new G1s. All I can say is that the hype is true. These cards are monster overclockers. With my EVGA SSCs I could never get them to hold over 1480MHz. They always throttled down. Installed the G1s and immediately went to overclocking and benching. I started with them at 1500MHz and stock voltage just too see what happened. Much to my surprise they ran through Firestrike/Unigene Valley and much to my pleasure they held steady as a rock and NO throttling. So, I kept cranking them up. I got to 1550MHz before I had to start adding a little voltage. The last benches I made were at 1590MHz and only adding 20mV...and still NO throttling. Just rock solid unwavering speed. The only downside is that I cannot clock the RAM as high as I could with the EVGAs without getting artifacts. I know Core is King when it comes to OCing, so I am OK with that.

Yep, the G1 970s are the best

Got two of them myself, but I haven't bothered to overclock them as they're already fast as hell at stock clocks, and boost to 1380 MHz and stay there unless you have really poor cooling.

Nice, i have included 1 in a build for a friend with 4790K.

Boosts to 1392 without touching the power settings

Thanks. I also can't believe how much quieter the G1s are than my EVGAs. I am talking not even close. The EVGAs sounded like jet taking off, I can barely even hear the G1s.

I'm pretty excited about picking up one of these soon too,not sure but does the G1 have the fan shut off if its a certain degree like the Msi or Asus?

No...but they spin low enough that I can not hear mine.

Yeah on a card mean't for overclocking,i think i would feel a bit better knowing the fans aren't controlled in such a way.I do love fan curves and even my Zotac Amp! 770 cooler makes next to no noise in idle compared to my pc case.

I guess a better selling point for the no fan is longevity?

I was able to push my 970's to an FPS of 114.9 last night on stock voltage but my score was in the 2800's. Looking through the 'Official Unigine Heaven' thread is seems most people running 970's SLI have scores in the 2800's. Any thoughts on how you've managed to score 4800 in Heaven?

That is Unigene Valley not Heaven. I will run Heaven here in a few minutes.

Impressive score.

Sorry for the confusion regarding Valley vs Heaven. My reading skills leave much to be desired.

Honestly, I wasnt too happy with my last EVGA SC either. It was a 560 448core. I had to run the fans full blast to get a measly 80mhz overclock. I dont think the cooler was nearly as good as it should have been. The next card i bought was from MSI.

They are really starting to impress these days, especially their OC models.

As for the memory clocks....
I have heard it doesnt make much of a difference with the 970. Seeing as it has the same bandwidth of a 980, its plausible. The 970 is cut down 3 smx, so having the same bandwidth should make it much less constricted than the 980.

I dont think my 970 ram will overclock too far at all. I tried +200 mhz and Dragon Age kicked me to the desktop. It might not have been the ram but I havent had any problems like that at all with it at +150mhz. As a matter of fact, i have been playing non stop with +250mhz on the core and 150mhz ram for over a week now. Rock solid.

oh, thats on a reference 970, so +250 keeps me boosted over 1500mhz. I havent really tested much with it but i dont think my ram will get too far.
So discussing this, i was told that overclocking the ram on a gtx 970 has very little results. Maybe there are others who can confirm this
