I'm also having trouble with my DS3 board.. possibly the RAM is incompatible, possibly the motherboard is bad... either way I'm going to sell the RAM and probably RMA the motherboard if a stick of qualified memory doesn't get the thing to POST.

I don't believe that RAM is compatible. On the Gigabyte site there is a page with compatible RAM and none of the OCZ stuff is listed there.

The DS3 has issues with RAM. If the SPD reports the memory should be configured as CAS latency (CL) 4, the DS3 instead sets CL to 3. Most CL4 memory will then fail to boot, as CL3 timings are just too difficult.

There are a few solutions available.

1. Avoid buying CL4-rated RAM. CL5 memory is cheaper, though you sacrifice performance.

2. Grab a non-CL4 stick (know anyone that can loan you some DDR2?), drop it in, then go into the BIOS and manually set the CAS Latency to something easy like 5. Then put in the memory you actually want to use, and adjust timings as needed.

3. Contact your memory manufacturer. Some manufacturers will take the memory in on RMA and reprogram it with "fixed" SPD data. G.Skill will do this. They will set CL to 5 and send it back to you. This will get the system to boot with the memory, then you will want to change the setting back to 4 in the BIOS.

4. Wait for a BIOS update from Gigabyte. It is expected, though not certain that they will release a BIOS update in the near future to correct the problem.

Obviously the other solution is just to buy a different board.

I had compatibility problems with the Gigabyte DS3 mobo and some G.Skill DDR2-800 ram. I think it was that by default the mobo would supply a max of 1.8v to the ram on boot, but the ram itself needed 2.1 or so volts or it wouldn't work. You could change it in the bios to give it 2.1v... but you can't get into the bios without ram :)

Some people worked around it using some cheap 1.8v ram to set the bios to give 2.1v, then swapped in their 2.1v ram and it worked. But I wasn't interested in this workaround, and instead ordered some A-DATA Dual Channel 2048MB PC4200 DDR2 Memory (ELJKD1A16K).
