Gigabyte 965P-DS3 Rev 3.3 - Techs, HELP!

I'm using a IDE DVD-RW (LG GSA-4163B) plugged in the IDE port of my Gigabyte 965P-DS3 rev 3.3.

It worked to install windows, it was working to install drivers off cd in windows, then it disapeared and stopped working, now theres just a ! in my device manager.

Help! Anyone knows how to get that to work? I tried more than 1 IDE dvd drive and it still wont work.

I have the set-up where IDE1 is my sata2 HD and IDE4 is my DVD drive. I think I did all the tweaks to have IDE to work, I'm not using raid. The bios options are set to enable IDE and the HD is plugged in the orange intel sata2 port.

My bios is v9 I doubt I'll upgrade to 10 because I don't know how / need it at the moment I think?

I had the same problem but it just turns out that my IDE drive just simply "went bad" after installing XP. Borrowed one from my father's comp and it worked fine. I want to get a SATA drive but haven't fully decided on which one yet. #4 above seems like a very nice choice. Anyone with personal experience should share it PLEASE.

How noticeable is the extra performance granted to you from this Gigabyte board compared to your previous Asrock 775Dual-VSTA?
 
Mr Vain, I have the same motherboard Cheex got.
It's running an E6400 @ 3.2 Ghz on a Sunbeam CR-SW-775 cooler with Vcore 1.3875 (or was it 1.3825?), Vfsb +.2, and VMCH +.1. The northbridge is still the stock cooler, just remounted with some AS5, now running at about 38C. Intel TAT with both cores at 100% shows 55 C. That Sunbeam is similar to an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. My memory is stock; it's ProMOS and doesn't want to overclock at all.
 
I formated and didn't install the sata raid drivers. I also didn't install JMicron drivers.

The DVD drive works like a charm now, just that the system doesn't feel as fast / stable as it should. I'm a bit unhappy at Gigabyte for trying to push me not to use their IDE port.

I'll go turn HPET 64BIT support ON in bios, might help make X64 more stable.

Do I need Intel Matrix Storage if I'm not using Raid? Will it just crash my working IDE or will it make my SATA2 HD react better to heavy loads (right now it sucks hard).
 
I would have tried using straight master setting then tried cable select. It might have not been the cause but sometimes bioses are finicky. I would have even tried setting it as slave, and maybe gotten a different cable (40 conductor instead of 80).

mr vain, if you read this thread, there is no comparison having both boards meself, when it comes to overclocking..the gigabyte is simply in a different league then the vsta..that being said, i kept the vsta cause it really was too good a board to give up. it has been moved to the B circuit in the house doing duty as a system for my kids running a pentium d 915 with 1 gig of corsair value ram. working great, as always.

i am running the ds3 3.3 version with an e6400 at 8 x 415 and cpu at 1.325 with marginal boosts for ram, fsb and mch options (.1 higher than stock on each). the cooler of choice for me was the thermaltake typhoon..super quiet even at high overclock .. this is in a pvr system so you know as well. i've had no corruption issues of any data at my overclock and the system is running 24.7.
 
I've had alot of quirky problems with this board ; frankly I freakin' hate it for the headaches it has given me.
As for your poor HD performance.... I had a similar issue if you check my post history. My SATA2 drive was basically working like total crap when it was plugged into the primary controller ports. It was totally functional just painfully slow in XP. I plugged into the JMicron port and it worked right away. Maybe just a driver issue but I see what happens when I install Vista.

I used 3 mobos. The ASRock 775Dual-VSTA, then the Foxconn P9657AA-8KS2H and then now the DS3 (3.3).

Performance-wise, it would be hard to compare since as I was using my Pentium D 915 on both the ASRock and the Foxconn. I upgraded and I bought an E6300 with my DS3.
Although it is not a "fair" comparison but my performance has improved a great, great, great deal.

I have a few questions for you...

1) What stepping is your E6400?
2) Can you give me a link on how to remove the NB HS so I can use some AS5 on mine as well?
3) I think I need to reseat my HSF because my temps are embarrassing the Tuniq Tower 120.
4) What effect on overclocking does raising the vFSB have?
5) Please give a link to your memory so I can see which is it. Mine is ProMOS as well and it hasn't done too bad.

If you set it to IDE mode in the BIOS, you do not need the Gigabyte/JMicron drivers to use the JMicron 363 controller on the Gigabyte 965P-DS3. The drivers are only used to support AHCI or RAID mode on the JMicron controller.

My experience was that you won't be able to install the Intel Matrix drivers on a 965P-DS3. This mobo uses the Intel ICH8 southbridge while the RAID support which the Matrix drivers are for is only supported by the Intel ICH8R southbridge.

So, in a word, no. You don't need/want the Intel Matrix drivers.

1) E6400, Stepping 6, Revision B2. It is an L626A441.
2) Sorry, my friend and I didn't use a link. Suffice to say, it's a horrible procedure. You should remove your motherboard from the system and remove all items from it, and then there are two connectors at the corners of the NB HS. Undo those tabs, and then start pulling. You may need to reach around behind it with extremely small needle-nose pliers or a tiny screwdriver; there may be tabs similar to the LGA 775 mounting system, I do not recall. In pulling it off, there is a powerful adhesive; you will probably think your board is about to snap. When my friend (he's a lot better at this than me) pulled it off, I winced at the snapping sound. I don't know how much it helped my temperatures; that was one of the first things we did.
3) Use Intel TAT; full load on both cores, tell me what both of them are. If they're severely different, that's a sure sign you didn't mount wrong. If you have high temps overall, then again it's probably wrong. When you're mounting your HSF (have you used the LGA 775 mounts before?), ...well, I don't know how Tuniq mounts. If you use the LGA 775 connection tabs, you need to look behind the motherboard and make sure that tiny black tabs are sticking through white two prong plastic spikes. If the Tuniq mounts different, then I have no idea.
4) VFSB is something my friend told me to use, from what I can understand it helps allow a higher FSB overclock. Vcore is the overall power for the CPU in its entirety; Vfsb is for the FSB speed, Vmch is for the northbridge/for the multiplier of the CPU. Try +.1 or +.2 if you're topping out. With this board and an E6300 (unless you have a horrible CPU batch) you should make 400 mhz on the FSB easily.

I am basically just lurking and watching this thread, but I wanted to thank you for your description of your Northbridge removal experience.

I've been considering removing the NB heat sink and redoing the thermal paste. But after your description ... particularly the "snapping sound" ... I'm pretty sure I've lost interest in attempting this particular mod. 😉 Besides, just slapping a small fan on top of the NB seems to have worked well enough so far in keeping my NB temps down.

Just wanted to add some information to this thread;

Removing the NB heatsink was a terrible ordeal for me. I never got it back on quite how I wanted - I'm waiting for a new HS to arrive anyway (the HR-05). Basically once you squeeze the little push pins on the back of the board out to remove the NB HS you aren't going to get the same pressure back. I had to rip out the plastic pins and used a bunch of screws and washers to remount it back on securely. Basically the same procedure as http://xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=117054 but with smaller screws. I'm sure if you are careful with the plastic pins you can get them back on after but it is really tricky and the pins are easy to bend out of shape permanently.

As for the problems with the IDE drives - I'd just like to point out that I have my SATA2 HD connected to the purple connectors AND my IDE DVD drive connected and I haven't had any problems. In fact; I had terrible performance issues when I had the HD connected the yellow Intel ports. I was getting all types of poor HD performance + weird errors in the Event Manager. Once I moved the HD to the Jmicron controller everything was fine. My BIOS setting is for IDE mode but my drive works fine and performs quick. I forgot that I already said this. LOL!
