Hi,

I've just built a new PC and I'm having real trouble with the fact I've got SATA2 hard disks. I've read so much contrasting advice I don't know which way to turn! Would really appreciate it if someone can clear this up once and for all.

I have 2 x 250GB SATA2 hard disks which I want set up as follows:

Drive 1:
C: Windows XP Install (for internet, ms office etc) | 40GB
D: Windows XP Install (music production) | 40GB
E: Data | 170GB

Drive 2:
F: Data | 250GB

In my motherboard (Gigabyte 965P-DS3) manual it talks about configuring a RAID array in RAID BIOS and make a floppy disk containing the SATA controller driver. I don't want RAID so this isn't appropriate but do I still need to install the drivers? It says in the manual that making the driver floppy is only necessary for AHCI and RAID. However I have read many forum posts and some people say you should install and some people say you shouldn't. When I created a floppy and pressed F6 to install an additional RAID driver it came up with the error message "file txtsetup.oem caused an unexpected error (1024) at line 172..."

Without installing the driver disk I was able to detect the hard drives fine and install and run windows xp, however I get some strange problems like the drive letters changing around in the initial windows installation screen when booting from CD. Also the BIOS is behaving abnormally - first time I installed windows if it was set to boot from CD if there was no CD in the drive it just hung on "Boot from CD" and the only way I could start windows was removing the CD Drive from the boot menu. The second time, it boots from the hard drive even if not set to in the bios and the keyboard is disabled when says press any key to boot from CD so I can't get boot into windows installer disk anymore.

Feel so lost and just want to get my computer to work!

Thanks,

Rik

I have the 965-P DS3 too with the same specs as you but not raid. Call gygabite and whine. THere is no perfect solution if you don't have the perfect cables, bios config and drivers + bios version.
