Gigabyte 965-DQ6 - not all USB ports 2.0?

I plugged a card reader yesterday on the back of my DQ6 and got a warning that it was a low speed USB port (1.1).

After checking in the device manager, I found this:
http://img81.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dq6usbod3.jpg

So, only 2 headers (4 ports out of 10) are USB 2.0?

Is this a mistake or I got less than I paid for?

It is a new Windows XP install, including the latest Intel Inf for the 965 chipset.

Can other people with 965 boards check that out?

USB ports are determined by southbridge. the ICH8R has only USB 2.0 port. Perhaps you should consider a bios update, redoing the drivers, and perhaps RMA.

BIOS is the F3 from 08/11/2006 (official one). I've redone the drivers already.

Before going to a RMA I would like to see if other people here can confirm all headers being USB2 by looking at the Windows Device Manager and not at the chipset features list.

I find very strange that a deffect would make the ports USB 1.1 only.....

Does enabling USB2 in CMOS normally make all headers USB2?

Are all your ports effectively 1.1 now or do some not give the warning from the card reader so are presumed 2.0?

Could the card reader be the problem?

Presumably, you should be using Intel drivers rather than Microsoft?

Have you checked the ICH8 specs at intel?

The ICH5 is similar in DM except there are only four USB and one USB2.

Here's a brilliant idea....wait for it...here it comes...

Did you try contacting the manufacture or checking the specs for the motherboard? How about THEIR forums?

Awesome idea...isn't it???

Did you get your 5694 posts writing like this?

Yes, I did check the specs.

About your awesome idea, I trust Anand's Forums to have smart people that could check things out also. Not just Pirate's Parrots repeating what others say.

Yes, because post count matters!?!!?

"smart people that could check things out also" It's like having someone do your homework for you :)

I'd personally ask Gigabyte. Their customer support is easy to deal with and it's simply an 800 number.

This is exactly the problem. USB2 is active in the BIOS. As you can see here,

Most of them are USB 1.1 during POST, before even Windows start to load.

This cannot be a driver issue, as there is no OS loaded. Even so. I'm using the latest Intel drivers.

Gigabyte and Intel specs both state 10 USB2 ports.

Review at Anandtech (also 10 USB2):

I just would like to find a forum member owning a P965 (if possible a Gigabyte) that could check that out ....

Here's the Specs:

Internal I/O Connectors 8 x Serial ATA 3Gb/s connector
1 x UDMA ATA 100/66/33 connector
1 x FDD connector
3 x USB 2.0/1.1 connectors (support 6 ports)
1 x audio pin header (support 8-Channel)
1 x S/PDIF In pin header
2 x IEEE1394 connector

Sorry I just re-read that, I beleive it means 2.0/1.1 compatible. Duh... Sorry

I checked, I posted and took the time to make pictures and upload them.
I didn't come here and just said there is some sort of problem, can you please help me? I'm demonstrating it.

People ask in the forum when they cannot find a solution alone. That's what the forum is about.

If you are not going to help, please stay out of the thread. Go troll somewhere else.

I'm not sure, but possibly the thinking is USB mice and keyboards don't need USB 2.0 really. Not sure but just a guess at that decision.

We have to include both the internal and back panel connectors. This is on the DQ6 website:

Internal I/O Connectors 8 x Serial ATA 3Gb/s connector
1 x UDMA ATA 100/66/33 connector
1 x FDD connector
3 x USB 2.0/1.1 connectors (support 6 ports)
1 x audio pin header (support 8-Channel)
1 x S/PDIF In pin header
2 x IEEE1394 connector

Rear Panel I/O
4 x USB 2.0/1.1 ports
1 x RJ45 port
1 x COM port
1 x LPT port
6 x audio jacks
1 x IEEE1394
1 x Optical SPDIF OUT
1 x Coaxial SPDIF OUT
PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse

Gigabyte used a slash, which I would read as supporting both standards. Intel specs states 10 USB2 ports.
My last Nvidia chipsets were all USB2. A brand new hardware like this should not be going back in time imo.

It's not trolling. I gave you a good suggestion. Call their customer support and get it straight from the horses mouth. It's your problem that you didn't like the suggestion, not mine.

I got a tip from Gary that this seems to be a normal thing for Intel chipsets.

I tried plugging an USB2 flash drive to all ports and no matter which port I plug, it shows as USB2. Other devices like printer, mouse or keyboard go automatically to USB 1.1
The Intel chipset has some kind of feature that makes this dynamic allocation.

I don't have 10 USB2 devices to try, but I understood that if you plug 10 USB2 devices, they will go under the USB2 hub and the USB1.1 branch will be empty. So the header or port itself is not fixed as USB2 or USB1.1

Despite what the POST screen shows, there will be 10 USB2 ports available if you need.

Glad you got it sorted. I notice my Bluetoof dongle which is supposed to be USB 2.0 is found under the Advanced tab of a USB Host Controller, rather than the USB2 Enhanced Host Controller. What up wid dat?

-
I was mistaken, it is Bluetoof 2.0 + EDR (Class II) on USB 1.1 so all is well. That is apparently sufficient as EDR is 3 Mbps and USB 1.1 rates are 1.5 and 12. Yeah, so that should all be perfectly clear to even a novice. ;)
