I am deciding between a Gigabyte GA-7N400-L and a Gigabyte GA-7VT600-L. Their costs are similar. The 7N400 is a nForce2 chipset. The 7VT600 is KT600 and supports SATA. Both are 400MHz FSB. I don't plan on overclocking.

Which do you guys recommend?

Thanks.

nForce 2 is a better performer, but I read on other site that the 7N400 has some problems (there's also a thread about this in here). Does it have to be gigabyte? or if you want another brand look at these mobos (they're on the same price range); ABIT NF7-S v2.0, EPoX 8RDA3+, MSI K7N2 Delta

If cost is your issue, I'd try to get the gigabyte 7vaxp ultra. If you don't need the 1394 you can get the 7va. I bought a couple of the 7va's for builds and they seem very stable. I'd stay away from both the boards you mentioned. There are tons of bugs and many unhappy customers with both versions.

My 7vaxp ultra runs for months without a reboot and is rock solid.

Try motherboards.org for reviews.

if i was to need a new board today and wanted to keep it under $80 i would either grab the soltek kt600-rl or MSI KT6 Delta-LSR (newegg has both instock and total cost with shipping is less then $80)

both are excellent performing boards (a little slower then the nforce2 boards, but very very close. plus they have way more features for the price)
they both come with serial ata, lan, high quality 6 channel audio, tons of usb 2.0 ports. and they support all current and future athlonXP cpu's
