Well, as long as DMA transfers are enabled, that's the important thing. Modern drives only push 40M/s STR, so even ATA/66 is alright. ATA/100 only helps burst speeds, which have been shown to have little effect on real world performance.
A few things to check:
- Does your WD drive default to ATA/66 for compatibility? You might have to download a little ATA toggle utility to put it in ATA/100 mode.
- Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager. Check your HD controllers. Do they say something like "DMA enabled and used if possible"? You don't want Windows initializing your controllers in PIO mode, for performance's sake.
- There is a Windows 2000 ATA/100 hotfix from Microsoft. I think it applies to all systems. I think it's built in to SP2, which you should of course download. Search their knowledge base or Windows update. Obviously download every single patch available from Windows Update.
- Install the very latest non-beta version of the VIA 4-in-1 service pack from VIA's official web site. I believe even if you have an AMD northbridge, the service pack will detect that and won't bother installing the AGP driver. The important thing is the latest IDE Busmaster driver, which you probably can't get separately at this point.
