gigabit too much on an older computer?

I just put in an Intel Pro 1000 MT PCI lan card in my slower computer (in my sig). The MB is probably about 5 yrs old and has a 10/100 controller built in. I've disabled it in the bios when installing the gigabit NIC. The cable is 5e to my switch and cat 6 from there to the computer.

When connected at 1 Gbps I can not get an uncorrupted 50MB download of nvidia drivers (this is how I found the problem). Tried changing all settings (flow control, transmit size, receive size, etc...) under device manager for the NIC, but only when I forced speed to 100 Mbps did this problem go away.

Only explanation I could come up with (aside from a defective NIC) is that my components are just too old/slow to handle gigabit. Is this a reasonable conclusion or should I begin rma'ing my NIC?

Unless you're downloading locally (from one PC to another, both over gigabit) I can't see how that would be a factor. It sounds like you're downloading from the internet, so obviously you'll get speeds of 4-8 megabit, nowhere near gigabit.

Do you have an entries in the Windows event log at the time this happened?

Does the same thing happen in safe mode with networking?

I do not know what causes the problem.

Typically it would be a bad cable.

One thing for sure it is Not the slowness of the computer, Giga can run on computers much slower than yours.

You have to remember that a network CAN'T corrupt data. It's impossible. Ever single frame has a checksum to insure integrity. If the checksum doesn't match the frame is ignored/dropped.

This sounds like a driver problem.

There could be other issues with the system such as undetected memory errors. You could test this by running Prime95 Torture Test for example.

Well, it seems to have been a driver problem after all. I was kinda betting it was cabling after my first reinstall of the OS didn't fix it, but after reinstalling a second time (this time not installing the C-media and SIS-LAN drivers from the MB CD) it seems to be working. *knock on wood*

I've never OC'd this machine and its been fine for the last 5 yrs without a BSOD, so I wasn't too concerned about memory problems.

Thanks for the suggestions. 🙂
