Gigabit switching with a megabit FIOS modem/router

I have FIOS with the Revision E version of their Actiontec modem router. The modem router is megabit. I'd like to connect a gigabit switch to the modem router and then connect all of my devices (e.g. PCs, NAS, media streamer, etc.) on the switch. Except for when a device needs Internet data, would the gigabit switch create a gigabit network that all the devices would run off of? For example, if the media streamer is accessing my NAS for content, would it stream at gigabit or at megabit speeds?

Connecting a gigabit switch to a megabit router is a perfectly fine idea. Everything connected to the gigabit switch will run at gigabit (assuming gigabit NICs too), and internet will go through the router.

Ah, that's good to hear. I was worried the whole network dropped down to the lowest common denominator.
