Gigabit Networking -- Any Point?

with the prices of gigabit switches, I've been thinking about buying one (may as well take advantage of my motherboard's integrated gigabit nic).

but would I see any benefit as far as downloading from the internet is concerned, or would the speed still be capped by the dsl modem?

Yes, your modem would cap your speed because even a 3mbit/1mbit connection wouldn't be even close to saturating a 10mbit NIC.

Gigabit speeds are only good for networking - unless you are in some ginormous business that has OCxxx type internet.

Do you have any other computers in your house that you want to network? Do they have 10/100/1000mbps NIC's in them? Will you be constantly sharing large files between them? If yes to all three, then maybe that gigabit switch is for you.

Edit: If you don't already have a router, get one, then connect it to the switch via it's uplink port . Remember - it is a switch, it's just for connecting things together - it won't have a firewall built in. If you are going to put it between your modem and computers, get a gigabit router instead (or a single port router, and connect that to your switch).

it amesk copying files from pc to pc as fast as a hd allows pretty much. 100mbit networks only yield about 6mb/s transfers. as for internet, that part is irrelevant, 10mbit networks are faster then most dsl.

So are you basically saying that Gigabit Ethernet is pretty much not worth the investment for home networks at this time? Would there be any benifit to having Gigabit Ethernet for playing modern multiplayer games on a LAN with 10 PCs connected at most? I'm going to configure a PC as a router with a couple of 10/100 NICs and connect an 8-port 10/100 switch to it and my cable modem to the other NIC. Do you think that is worthy investement for the next couple of years, or will Gigabit Ethernet become mainstream and make anytjing less look obsolute in less than 2 years?

a normal home network won't even get close to 100mb/s. you will abosolutley see no difference having gigabit during a lan party. however, having a gigabit backbone might be worth it (enterprise).

actually home networks have no problem maxing out 100 Base-T with modern hardware. Gig will yield some improvement but we're talking you'll see 200-300 Mbits/sec.

Its not the network that is lagging behind. The network will indeed move data at EXACTLY 1000 Megabits/sec. Its a matter of if a host can transmit at that rate.
