So I am trying to do a wired backhaul to a second Google Wifi unit from a Gigabit switch. It isn't a very long run, maybe 50 ft, but it keeps staying at 100mbps.
I decided to try putting a small gigabit switch up there in place of the Google unit. As soon as I tried that I had Gigabit from the original switch to the new switch. Then connecting the Google box to the small switch it also is connecting at Gigabit.
So is there any reason I can succesfully get Gigabit across the board if I go Switch -> Switch -> Google but if I just go Switch -> Google its only 100?

Try a shorter cable - if it connects at 1000, then for some wacky reason the Google unit either doesn't like that long of a cable, or the cable itself.

Also, isn't there something about running LAN cables perpendicular across other cables for some reason (interference maybe?)

Make sure the cables have all 4 conductor pairs connected (8 conductors). 10/100 only uses two twisted pairs (4 conductors).

Sounds like a physical layer problem, I agree with others here.

If that doesn't clear it up, reset the second wifi unit / check for some lame power saving option that may be turned on.
