Gigabit connection between wiring closet?

My boss has this crazy idea of running gigabit connection between two wiring closets. It would connect from the main switch in the server room to a switch utilize by about 20 ppl. these 20 ppl access a variety of accuonting and fundraising type software. there are no speed issues as far as i know but he just wants to install new things for the hell of it.

it's budget time so he's buying things he sees in eweek that sounds cool. mind you we end up playing around with things that shouldn't have been implemented in the first place.
 
What connects the 2 switches? If you have 20 people connecting to a switch at 100MHz and then only have a 100MHz link to the next piece of the pie, you have a potential bottleneck depending on what they are doing.

Actually the preferred method for interconnection 10/100 switches is gigabit ethernet. Have fun and make sure its fiber.

Second what spidey07 said. You may be able to get away with gig over copper but if you're going between floors or a long distance you're better off with fiber (not just for signal, but also for electrical safety reasons).

You should tell your boss that 10Gb/s Ethernet is much, much cooler 😉

then something is wrong. Very wrong. If you have fiber between two buildings then you should be running 1000 Base-SX (short - under 270 M) or 1000 Base-LX (long). Maybe have the fiber tested or look at the interfaces/design.

But fiber should not be slow if used properly.
 
It's not the fiber, it's what's running over the fiber. It could be a 100BaseF or a 10BaseF or SONET or who knows what. Don't assume that fiber == gigE.
 
Slow over fiber?
Is there a router between you and the other building? I know we have this issue right now.

I am buying a new 12-port Gig switch that accepts fiber or copper gbics so i can take our BCN out of the loop.

Our switch closets all go from the actual closet to a main switch for each subnet via fiber, from there they go via X-over cable to the BCN at only 10/100.
Talk about a bottle neck, our desktop guys get like 275-300mb when doing a ghost on the same subnet, if they go to another subnet it drops to like 30mb.

All that routing through the BCN is whats killing us, once i replace the switches that go to the BCN with a new 16121T, i can do all the routing for my subnets on that switch and then only use the router to get to our other building around the corner.

If your fiber is slow something is either misocnfigured, routing incorrectly, or there is a bottleneck or bad cable somewhere.
